Off to Gatwick Airport

by Ed Spencer

Gatwick is the second largest international airport in the United Kingdom, after London Heathrow. However, it does have the busiest single use runway in the world, so you can expect it to be bustling upon your arrival! There is a North and South terminal, so do make sure you know which one to head for when you're flying from this airport. Your journey will run a lot more smoothly if you forward plan.

Before you set off, ensure that you have your passport (if travelling abroad) and all of your flight documents. Be aware that some restrictions may apply to your main luggage and your hand luggage, as well as items carried on your person. Most airlines do not allow sharp objects such as scissors, or large amounts of liquid. There may also be restrictions on items such as aerosols.

When you're sure you have everything for your trip, you'll need to arrange your journey to the airport. Gatwick is based over twenty miles south of the city of London; there are long stay car parks at the airport, so it's worth finding out how much it would cost for you to stay for the duration. Generally, you'll need to take a shuttle bus if you do opt for the long stay car park. It may be more cost effective to book a Gatwick airport taxi, which could drive you directly to the correct terminal. You can book a Gatwick taxi in advance or on the day, at a time to suit your needs.

Twelve trains run per hour from central London to Gatwick; the advantage is that you may be able to get a great deal, but the disadvantage is that you will have to carry your own luggage. This is often fine for business travellers, but for families or those going on holiday, a London Gatwick airport taxi could make your journey a lot easier. If there are young children in tow, you'd do anything for a hassle free ride!

Whether you choose to take a coach or bus, a train or a taxi in Gatwick, make sure you arrive with plenty of time to check in; usually, passengers are advised to arrive three hours before the time of their flight. This may seem like a long time, but there are often queues at the check in desks and in the security checks; it's better to be safe than sorry. To keep you busy during your wait, you'll find a wide selection of shops, restaurants and cafes, both landside and airside. All that's left now is to board the plane, so enjoy your trip and fly safely.
