Consult the Raleigh Dentists for cavities or Tooth Decay
Tooth decay, also known as caries, is a disorder in which a hole or defect forms in the outer mineral layer of a tooth. The normal tooth is made of a hard mineral layer, which surrounds a softer layer. The outer layer or enamel is above the gum line; underneath is dentin, which is a softer mineral layer in which the nerves and pulp of a tooth lie. When a cavity forms, the outer enamel layer has a hole, which, if deep enough, exposes the layer containing the pulp. This can lead to nerve damage, tooth loss, and even death from infection spreading past the tooth to the jaw. Each person has numerous bacteria naturally living in the mouth, which can form plaques. When a person eats, the food meets the bacteria in the mouth, and sugars and starches are digested, leaving behind acid. This acid can then demineralize and erode the protective enamel of the teeth. One of the main reasons for tooth decay is poor dental hygiene. Not flossing or brushing properly or often enough could enable plaques to build up. Not seeing the Raleigh dentists could also allow early signs of cavities to develop.
Due to the other element leading to tooth decay is food, a diet high in refined starch and sugar is also one of the main reasons for tooth decay or cavities. This comprises foods such as honey, candy, juice and sweetened snacks. For cavities, how often these sugary food items are eaten shows the risk of progressing decay i.e., if an individual consumes these foods three different times a day, he would have more risk than somebody who eats them just once a day. Other risk factors comprises not having access to the fluoride, either in the water or in items such as mouthwash or toothpaste. Babies are at risk of developing "baby bottle caries" while they are allowed to go to sleep with sweetened syrups in their bottles or if they get multiple feedings of sugared liquids.
Early tooth decay has no signs or symptoms. If the cavity enlarges, there can be increased sensitivity to cold and cold drinks or pain after having sweet drinks or food. There can also be softening of the teeth around the decay. There have also been associations with foul odors or bad breath in progressed decay. If anyone is suffering from tooth decay or cavities it is the perfect time to see the raleigh dentists in advance. Only a dentist will be able to help in solving this problem effectively.
