How Poor Coping Negatively Leads To Addiction

by Ericka Lopez

Coping mechanisms are ways of human beings to adjust to influences both external and internal happenings and situations. These actions are deliberately focused on reducing negative effects of untoward incidents in life like coping after a loss of a loved one, failing an exam, separation from old friends and family members. Some internal challenges also require a person to cope like low self-esteem, psychological disorders like anxiety and depression where there's no real known cause of such emotions.

The concept of coping connects with how people adapt to certain situations in order to maintain a healthy and balanced well being both on the physical and psychological sides. There are many however whose ideas of coping often cause dangerous and hazardous results because the answer to their predicament creates another bigger and heavier problem. An example of this is drug addiction. Many of those who take drugs have good intentions in doing so. The side effects of the drug intake give them a sense of well-being and energy. Some medications provide added strength and relieve anxiety and pain. Dependence on the drug deepens over long-term use and reliance on the drug for better feelings become more dominant.

The problem of abuse of drugs is ever troubling before our society. A lot of those who have been trapped in drug addiction need the support and help of friends and family. Greater patience and understanding are necessary to lift those who've been addicted to drugs to achieve a higher and better way of living. There are many who have this kind of problem but are scared to open up and share their innermost fears. Society often creates stereotypes which prevent change from those who want it. Social pressure often is also a perpetrator of this serious problem.

For those who have are suffering from drug addiction, there is still an option. Entering into drug rehab centers will help addicts return to their normal lifestyles after therapy. These centers offer a number of ways to help individuals recover from addiction. Therapy is a continuous process because once addiction has been developed; there may be instances when a relapse occurs. This means that after some time of not taking the drugs, cravings for drug usage often surfaces and so there should be constant effort to avoid it. Some addicts may require medication as part of their therapy while others who have not developed heavy addiction can benefit from support groups and discussion sessions with other abusers who desire to change.
