The Delightful Gurney Drive in Penang

by Andrew RT Wong

Gurney Drive or Persiaran Gurney, located along the Northern coast line of George Town, Penang is a place filled with local hawker stalls offering the most delicious street food in Penang. This place was named in commemoration of the late Sir Henry Gurney, a British High Commissioner of the then Malaya in 1950 - 1951 who was killed by the local communist guerrillas in the Malayan Emergency in the early 1950s. It was formerly situated very close to the embankment of the coast line but was later shifted inwards to its current located. Arriving in here for a visit, there is no need for tourists to wonder around deciding what to do in Penang as this is a must come place and the Gurney Drive food is simply the best in town.

There are arrays of well organized hawker stalls in this place culminating into a delightful local hawker centre. The stalls are so many; up to a hundred I think starts filling up with people even before dusk. People come here to grab their late afternoon tea break or early dinner. Food choice wise, I think you can spend the whole night there without even finish trying half of the delicious food stalls available here. Most famous Penang delicacies are served here. These includes the ever popular Penang Char Kuey Teow, the spicy Penang Asam Laksa, the aromatic oyster omelet, Cuttlefish Convolvulus, Chinese dumpling noodle or Wantan Mee, deep fried chicken skin, pork Satay, seafood such as blanched plate of cockle, steam seashell and Ikan Pari, Penang Rojak, Muar Chi, smoked cuttlefish, and countless more. There is also this famous food in a stick better known as Lok-Lok. It is similar to a steamboat style of food where you dip the stick of food of your choice into a hot soup or Satay kind of sauce to cook it and eat it on the spot. They have fish balls, Sotong balls, fried Wantan, chicken meat, seafood Taufu and sausages to name a few. Drinks wise there are many home made drinks like soya bean, sugarcane drink, Lo Han Kor, Teh Tarik and many more. All these you can try while enjoying the hustle and bustle of the busy hawker stalls with a panoramic sea view of the Penang coast line.

Besides the hawker stalls, which is the main attraction of Gurney Drive, there are also numerous restaurants and drink bars nearby for those who like to hang out after their food invasion at the hawker stall. They are The Chillout Club, Martini Café, G Spot and 75°C Restaurant & Bar to name a few. Within the local vicinity are located numerous restaurants which offers foods from local Nyonya cuisine to western fast foods. Located nearby is the huge Gurney Plaza Shopping centre and The Paragon Mall for visitors to indulge in some shopping and light entertainment as well.

Anyone who doesn't know anything about Penang food will be very much educated after their visit to Gurney Drive. While the foods here are delicious and hard to forget, we as visitors to this food heaven in Penang must remember not to leave the area with drinking cups and empty food wrappers all over as these will provide a huge headache for the people responsible to clean up the mess. Throw any rubbish into the bins provided and leave only with a stomach full of food and sweet memories to remember from this delightful place called The Gurney Drive, Penang.
