N gauge is the 2. famous scale of model railway on the globe. N is 1:150 to 1:160 gauge.

N gauge was introduced from Arnold the german manufacturer in the 60's. N scale is a popular model railroad track scale. Depending on the producer (or country), the gauge ranges from 1:148 to 1:160. The scale is 9 mm (0.354 in). The term N scale refers to the track dimensions, but in United Kingdom in particular N scale refers to a 1:148 scale with 9 mm (0.354 in) track gauge modelling. Advantages of N scale is that it allows hobbyists to build layouts that take up less space than H0 scale, or put longer track runs into the same amount of space, because the models are smaller (by nearly a half) than they are in H0 scale (1:87). While N gauge is quite small, it is not the smallest available scale, as Z scale is smaller at 1:220 and T gauge is 1:450 or 1:480.

N scale has a big global following group. Scale models are made of many standard gauge prototypes from several continent. N gauges fame is the second only to that of HO gauge. In Japan, where space in houses is more limited, N scale is the most famous scale, and H0 gauge is considered large. Not all modellers select N gauge because they have small spaces. Some use N gauge in order to model more complex or more visually expansive scale models.

Although model railways and accessories of similar scale existed as early as 1927, modern manufactured N gauge model railways were first marketed by the Arnold factory of Nuremberg (Germany) in 62. Unlike other scales, which were de facto standards at best, within 2 years N scale manufacturers defined the gauge, voltage, also the height and type of couplers.

In the USA and Europe, scale models of standard gauge (1,435 mm/4 ft 8 1⁄2 in) trains are built to 1:160 gauge and made so that they run on N gauge track, but in other countries changes are made. Finescale modellers also use variants of normal N gauge.

In the UK a gauge of 1:148 is used for commercially produced scale models. In Japan, a scale of 1:150 is used for the model railroads

N gauge engines are powered by DC motors which accept a maximum of 12 V DC. In traditional DC control, the speed of the model railroads is determined by the amount of voltage powered to the rails. The direction of the model trains is determined by the polarity of the powering to the rails. Since the end of the 20th century, an increasing number of modellers have been using digital model railwaycontrol systems to determine the speed and direction of their model railroads.This had in part been made available by surface mount technology and new motors that draw very little current (typically 0.2 amps). The most popular digital control systems taken in N gauge model railroads are Selectrix and NMRA-DCC.

Standards are useful to both producers and modellers are maintained by MOROP in Europe and the NMRA in North America.

N gauge 1:160 to 1:148 is considered always compatible with 1:144 scale for mini wargaming. .
