Is It Right For Men To Wear Tutus?

Most people think of women when they think of tutus. They picture prima ballerinas who have worked their entire life to be the center of the stage, wearing a pink tutu and point shoes. They picture an all female cast, and if they do picture men they think of the guys who stand off to the side, only there to help the girls with jumps and other moves. The Trocks have thrown a dance slipper into this image, and have paraded an all male dance troupe around the world, wearing tutus.

Trocks is an all male dance troupe that creates comedy dances and shows. This company takes the classical dances, Swan Lake, Nutcracker and others and turns them into comedies. The Trocks throw in fake errors in the show, show dancer colliding and talking with each other. The whole thing is done while most of the men wear tutus and heavy make up to look like women. All in point, this takes years worth of learning beyond men's normal dance education to achieve and perfect. While many people would assume that comical ballet would be poor ballet, and there would be a complete lack of skill in the dancers, this is not how Trocks works. Each of the dancers in the troupe is well educated and perfect in both line and movement. They just make it a point to practice and explore roles that are otherwise female only. They have made it a point to educate themselves in the art of point dancing which involves more balance and strength than the traditional slippers.

The Trocks even wear the same outfits as their female counterparts, with the only difference in outfits being the size. The point shoes are the same, the tutus are the same and the hairstyle, although fake, is the same as the women wear in the different shows. The primary difference is the gender of the dance professionals and the comedy moves that have been put into the dance. While some people are uncomfortable with the idea of men in tutus, it should be noted that unless one makes it a point of remembering that these are men, and not women, it can be hard to tell the difference. Yes, these men are bigger than the women, but when they are all on the stage together with no women, it can be difficult to judge their size. Sit back and enjoy these men in tutus.
