What Elements Work Best on Business Cards

by Kate Manheaven

Experts say that legibility, conciseness, and lack of clutter are the components of an effective business card. Over the years, these modest business cards have become a crucial part of the marketing industry. But because they are omnipresent in almost every industry today, they run the risk of getting overlooked. Add to that the growing trend for online marketing and it would be no wonder when these cards are eventually ignored by business owners. But smart entrepreneurs know better than to launch a marketing campaign without the business cards.

Though small in stature, every business should make the business card in front of their marketing initiative. As this card serves as the representative of the company when left with a customer, it serves as their sole connection with the prospect. And if you want to maintain strong connection with customers, you need your card to work at its best. But what does really it take to make an effective business card? Here are ideas on what works when it comes to business cards:

Who you are. What should be prominent in a business card is the business name and logo. In most instances, businesses opt for a name that pretty much says everything about the company—who it is and what products or services it offer. The logo also is designed to reflect the brand and image of the business. But in cases where the name and the logo don’t clearly say much about the offerings of the business, here are ideas to consider:

1. Include a descriptive tagline under the business name that explains what you do. For instance, “a little shop of sweets”. This will make it easier for people to know what product or service you offer.

2. List your top products of specialties. But be sure not to clutter your card with too much products. Just list down your most popular or patronized product.

3. Put your job title or profession. Just like the tagline, a descriptive title will make it easier for people to know who you are. A sample title is “home entertainment designer” written under your name in your business card templates.

Legibility. If your customers take more than a second to recognize who you are and what you business card says, that’s bad news. It’s likely that your card is cluttered and confusing. Designing a legible card is very important to business. After all, you only have a few seconds to make a good impact. The color, font, and layout of your card all play an important role in legibility. The texts should not only be highlighted but should carry a meaning to the reader.

Does your business card reflect your personality? Good first impression is critical. A professional looking business card will create a certain impression on people, so does a casual business card. Whatever look you want for your card, what is important is the impression that it gives people. As much as possible, you want a card that reflects your personality. If you are a small business operating in a small town, you would not want a card that looks too professional or cold. But if you are a company dealing with high-end urban clients, then you need a card that is professionally designed and communicates a corporate sense of style. From the right fonts to the colors and message, your business card has to be designed right and never understated.
