The Role Played By Water In Maintaining Good Health

by John Anderson

We constantly lose bodily fluids in the form of skin evaporations and through sweat, urination and stools. Dehydration occurs when these bodily fluids are not replaced with water in the time. The mechanism of thirst is controlled by posterior pituitary gland. The brain communicates with kidneys to decide whether the fluids are to be reserved in the body or discharged as urine. When the body is low on fluids, the brain activates thirst mechanism which makes a person thirsty. This sense of thirst is accelerated in warmer climates and high altitudes. The loss of fluids through strenuous exercising often makes an individual thirsty.

Water also aids and takes active part in various bodily functions such as digestion, absorption, blood circulation and maintaining the body temperature. It has long been used as an effective weight loss strategy. Calorie intake can be reduced by choosing high water content diet to high calorie foods and beverages. Such food is often large in volume, takes time for digestions and gives the sense of fullness of stomach. Fruits, vegetables, soups and beans contain higher quantity of water.

Fruit juices, alcoholic beverages and sugary drinks are often considered as good sources of fluids. However, rather than replenishing bodily fluids, they actually dehydrate the body. Hence they are not advised when you are low on fluids.

Dehydration can worsen skin conditions like wrinkles and may make you look older than age. Adequate water intake helps to retain the moisture on skin, keeping the dryness away. It makes skin to look supple and soft and improves texture of skin.

Water is the chief component on which many systems in the body depend. It is everywhere-in blood, muscles, lungs and brain. The process of nutrients transporting and removal of waste through kidneys are facilitated by it. If intake of fluids is adequate, the body can easily discharge blood urea nitrogen – a toxic substance through urine. This substance is only soluble in water and without it, the kidneys cannot be cleansed properly. Inadequate intake may also lead to kidney stones. It also helps to prevent Kidney infections.

If you are suffering from constipation, along with increasing the consumption of dietary fiber, increasing water intake also helps. It stimulates contents of stomach to keep moving from small intestines. When fluid level in the body is less than necessary, the colon draws water from the stools which results in constipation.

It is recommended that people should drink fluids during exercises to replenish the muscle cells. If water intake is not sufficient, these cells often lose balance of cell fluid and electrolytes which often leads to fatigue.

It may not be necessary to drink 8 glasses of water if your lifestyle in sedentary or you are not involved in exercising. The fluid needs vary from person to person and thus it is recommended to drink water as per the thirst cues given by the body.

Thus water ensures physical, mental and overall well being of the body. It is necessary to drink pure and clean water as needed to be healthy and ensure that your body is functioning well.
