How to Get Started

One of the great things about coin collecting is that you don't need any special tools or equipment. In fact, you probably have everything you need right in your pocket. It's not necessary to have a platinum coin or rare gold bullion. A few interesting coins is all it takes to begin a collection. You might be drawn to particular denominations. The United States has been issuing quarter dollars with new designs on the reverse for several years. These designs feature each of the fifty states and all US territories; each design contains landmarks, people, animals, and other items unique to each state. These attractive and unusual coins sparked renewed interest in coin collecting; they're easy to come by, which makes these state quarters a very simple way to get started.

It's also possible to collect foreign currency. Coins from Canada and Mexico are relatively easy to find; it's likely that someone you know has a few that they'd be willing to give you. Handling and Storing Your Coins

All this handling and use gradually wears down the fine lines and miniscule detail of a coin, so if you want to keep your coins in good condition you'll have to take particular care when handling them. Never hold a coin by its face; pick it up and hold it by its edges instead.

Though you might be tempted to rub away that tarnish, don't do it. Cleaning a coin with harsh, abrasive methods can actually damage it. A considerable amount of a coin's collectable value is based upon how much of the original image remains on the coin; a coin with a sharp, well-defined image is worth much more than one that's worn down. Even if a coin looks dirty, it's better to leave it be.

Coins should be stored in holders intended for them. You can purchase inexpensive cardboard folders that will hold each coin snugly in its own space. These folders are very helpful because they are already labeled; you can see at a glance what coins you have in a series and which ones you have yet to acquire. You can also get small transparent envelopes from a collector's shop to showcase individual coins. Also, always keep your coins out of reach of small children who might be tempted by them. Coins are small and easily lost; they're also easy to swallow.

With proper care and storage, your coin collection will become something you can take real pride in. Coin collections can become family heirlooms and will be treasured for generations.
