Off Lease Computers - What You Should Remember

by Greg Pierce

Before anything else, let us define the term 'off lease.' Off lease refers to equipment that has been leased to and used by a company, then returned to the leasing agent after the end of the lease period. You see, some businesses lease their equipment for about five years instead of buy them. Once the equipment is returned to the leasing agent, it is inspected to see if there are damages and then the agent cleans it and then repackages it to be sold.

Let's say a consumer leases a computer for a period of time (usually between one to five years). When the lease period is up, the computer is returned, tested and repaired, repackaged and resold as as an off-lease computer.

A great deal of public entities, businesses, institutions, and consumers opt for off-leased products to save a lot of money. But there are some things that you need to know first prior to purchasing an off-lease product.

These equipment have quality designations in accordance to it's condition. A Class A designation means the product is in very good condition. Buyers will get customer assistance and a limited warranty when they buy these items. Class B means the product is also in great condition but is using an old operating system (Windows 98, ME, 2000, NT). They're usually sold with really limited warranty and no customer assistance. Class C means the product is functional but has not been prepared for reselling. Sometimes, Class C products may be damaged. These items can still be sold but it will be sold as it is and no warranty can be enjoyed by the buyer. Class D means the product is in poor or unknown condition. When sold, buyers won't see any indication whether it is still functional or not.

These computers still bear the manufacturer's original warranty despite the fact that they may be a few months or a few years old. Typically, class A products will be not more than 3 years of age. They will still be retaining the majority of their useful life. Today, the performance of a brand new computer is more or less comparable to those 2-year old computers in terms of its basic operations. It is practical to go for off lease computers if you are just using it for normal or basic functions. Today, we see new computers coming out every six to eight months but your business should be okay using a hardware made the last 5 years.
