A Fateful Day In My Life

We always remember an incident from our career which changed our life. I am recounting one such incident that made such a huge impact on me. This incident took place almost a year ago when I had just started my career as a nurse with a big hospital. In the first few months, I had found it slightly difficult to cope with the sight of blood and patients writhing in pain. Eventually with the assistance of my senior colleagues, I overcame my anxiety and settled down into my routine duties.

One fine morning, as we were all settling down into our duties, we received a call to attend a briefing being conducted by our chief of surgery. This was very unusual and we were all very curious. He informed us that a major accident had taken place which involved the pile-up of about 10 vehicles. The injured people needed onsite medical assistance as bringing them to the hospital could prove fatal. He wanted us to form teams and visit the site at the earliest to provide all possible medical assistance. Five teams were set up - each team consisted of 3 doctors and 4 nurses and we carried all the medical accessories necessary for the mission. Each team piled into an ambulance and headed towards the accident site.

The scene at the site was overwhelming - even the most experienced doctors were stunned at the sight. There were so many bodies lying around on the road and many more trapped inside the wreckages. It took us a few minutes to come out of the shock. The instruction given to us in our briefing was to prioritize our patients as time was the most important factor. The most critical patients received immediate attention and so on. The onsite first aid was provided to the patients and now we needed to shift the patients to the hospital.

I was accompanying Dr. Wilson in one of the ambulance and to our dismay our ambulance also met with an accident. The brakes were hit hard and due to the force the shelf fell on my legs and I was unconscious. When I opened my eyes I was in the hospital with a minor surgery already done on my legs to fix the broken bones. Doctor advised me a months rest and to wear compression socks to help with the blood circulation in the legs. The recovery period was hard as I couldn't kill the time, after a week's time I started visiting the hospital to help my colleagues with attending phone calls and doing paperwork. Sitting in the hospital and looking at all my friends working even I was as eager as ever to wear my nursing apparel and resume my duties. Finally after a month the doctors checked and gave me a fitness certificate to resume my work. I was overjoyed hearing that and next day I resumed my duties; work started as usual but I still can't forget that fateful day.
