by Eveline Biesecker

[randimg] Sadly, many people rush out to buy a pet without prior consideration. Having a dog in the family requires the right preparation. Training a dog improves their behavior and reduces the amount of trouble they get into. This article provides the basics for dog training.

Give a treat to your dog when it responds to an order and is obedient. After they get the hang of it, back off the treats and only give them a treat 75% of the time, and continue reducing treats until they only get one occasionally.

When training your dog to stop puppy chewing, it is important to always be consistent. Consistency includes tone of voice, trained words, treats, and commands.

[randvideo] Use praise to re-enforce good behavior in your dog when training. Smile, offers treats and show excitement to relay to your dog that he is doing something positive. Don't reward any bad behavior or it will be reinforced.

You shouldn't wait for bad behaviors to start to begin preemptively addressing them. Most new dog owners can expect at least one bad behavior to crop up during their time as a dog owner! Start addressing inappropriate soiling, destructive chewing and separation anxiety as if they're likely to happen, and make sure your environment makes those things hard to occur!

Have your dog stand when you begin training him to sit. Hold a treat above him. Move the treat right above his head and behind him. The dog will look upward in order to see your hand. Naturally, the dog will sit in order to see upward.

When using a crate to train your dog, you'll want to make sure that you select the right size. Keep in mind that puppies grow big. Choose a crate which will be the right size for the dog when he grows up. Your dog should be able to make itself comfortable in a crate big enough for it to toss and turn.

Dog-proof your home if you know that your dog is prone to chewing and biting everything in sight when the family is out. If you don't want to crate your dog, you will have to act as if there is a baby in the house and remove access to those things that your dog may get into when you're gone.

The "down" command is something you should teach your dog. This is useful on its own, but also opens up other tricks. A dog that understands the "down" command can lower to the ground immediately in a risky situation, so it's perfect for safety reasons.

Do not punish your dog for chewing unless you catch him in the act. For example, if you discover your shoes have been gnawed on, your dog likely does not remember. Punishing him for chewing hours later has no impact and will not help the behavior. Instead, remember to reinforce positive behavior and look for opportunities to correct inappropriate behavior when it occurs.

Say your pet's name in a nice way, and use it for rewarding, not punishing, your dog. This will help foster greater success, in that the dog will connect hearing its name with engaging in proper behavior. Never speak your dog's name using a negative tone.

If you don't want your dog to chew your furniture, making it unpleasant, can help. There are many clear and odor free products on the market that you can put on an item. These products will make the item taste bitter or unpleasant, thereby, deterring your pet from chewing it.

Take the tips you have just learned and get busy training your dog to stop puppy chewing. Stay patient and reward your dog when they act properly. These tips will not be mastered overnight, but you and your dog will soon get there.
