by Cecelia Brown

Do you have trouble choosing a gift for a friend, your mother, sister or daughter? It's satisfying when you find something that really suits the personality of the receiver, but sometimes you just want to have a gift in hand. Consider giving a gift for the garden this year. Solar products stand out as whimsical and creative, one is sure to be just right for the person you have in mind. These items are enjoyed during the day and then offer a different experience during the evening hours. Popular solar gift items include:

1. Solar Wind Chimes - The two most common types are the Capiz shells solar chimes and the Crackled Glass Globe that changes colors. Both create beautiful sounds when the wind blows and then later the chime is illuminated.

2. Solar Lanterns - There are many different decorative solar lanterns making it hard to pick a favorite. You can find traditional-looking lanterns with a mission-style design or dragonflies etched in the glass, or smaller tea-light mosaic glass lanterns. Other types include figures, like gnomes and bears, holding a solar lantern, perfect for greeting your visitors.

3. Solar Bird Feeders - A twist on the traditional bird feeder, a solar light at the top guides the birds to food all evening long. Solar bird feeders can be found made of decorative glass, wire mesh, wood and plastic. They have a solar panel at the top which illuminates an LED light automatically at night.

4. Solar Stepping Stones - Often made of a resin material or cast stone, lighting your path with solar stepping stones is certainly uncommon and will guide you through the garden. There are stones that look like tree trunks and many that are decorative, colorful tiles.

5. Solar Birdbath - An earth-friendly garden centerpiece, the solar fountain is available in styles such as cascading 4-tier, birdbath, smaller basins with an animal at the helm, pond or pool, and solar on demand. Solar fountains are powered by the sun, through a solar panel and pump, with some having the option to use a backup battery. Solar water fountains are found in many different color finishes and are made of glazed ceramic, weather-resistant resin, fiberglass, and cast-stone. There are small basins and tiered solar fountains. Many of the solar on demand fountains have LED lights that illuminate the water flow at night. The solar fountain is lightweight, portable and uses renewable energy to operate. A solar bird bath does not need to be near a power source and costs nothing to operate.

With energy prices continually on the rise, many people are looking for ways to reduce costs around the house. Utilizing solar garden products is a simple, low-maintenance choice to add beauty and excitement to the garden landscape.
