A Brief Audio Mastering Tutorial

by Phil Zotti

Interested in mastering your own music at home? If you want to save some money and to have complete control over your album, you may take into account doing it yourself, so take into account my audio mastering tutorial for info on how you can do just that making use of simple plugins and effects.

First, it's significant that you start off with the greatest possible file and mix of your song before you start mastering which ideally means working with the original mixed file which hasn't been compressed or converted to any other format.

If you begin working with MP3s and other lesser sound file types, you are already giving up audio quality without even realizing it, so render your final mix of tracks into a wave file and work from that. You then load that wave sound file into your audio production software of choice and remember to remove any warping so that the sound file exists as is. From there you can start to apply plugins and effects to that final mix files such as eq.

Eq is the most effective tool at a mastering engineer's disposal as it lets him or her to chop up the audio spectrum of a song into three different spectrums called bands. As soon as you break up your audio into different sections, you're able to decipher which spectrums in the audio should be tweaked or brought down and up in that ultimate spectrum.

Tweaking individual spectrums of a final mix will yield different results which can bring out the greatest in an otherwise lacking song. For example, you can raise the effect and presence of the low-end of your tune if you locate that it's missing or lacking in a base presence until it's to your liking.

I like to do this in relation to acoustic tunes in some cases because the guitar I use is also overpowering at the sound hole and does not give me the sound I want. I like to mic my acoustic guitar right at the 12th fret or just below it as I find it gives me the most rounded sound but at the same time I'll often times locate that the lower end is lacking thusly.

This could be easily remedied by enhancing the presence of the low-end via my Eq. I second commonly like to add a little element more to the treble end of the spectrum to remove a little part of that stifled sound in the recording. If you go also far in boosting your high and you will have an album which sounds to tinny and even grading, so you should be very strict in the handful of Eq that you contribute in raising a particular section.

If you locate that any aspect of the final mix sounds as well flat, you might add a touch of reverb to give it a feeling of more atmosphere. Oftentimes if you are trying to master your own music, odds are you are recording your own music, too.

As soon as you record your own music, often times that you don't have the greatest possible space acoustically to record which is why your record can end up sounding flat. A little reverberation can give an extra dimension to your music and can even be used in an aesthetic way dependant upon how you want the sound.

A little audio compression is secondly good when raising the volume of the track or ensuring that multiple tunes are in parity with one another without compromising the ranges of that song.
