The Truth About Carpet Cleaning

The truth about Carpet Cleaning

You can pay a professional to clean your carpets, or you can purchase a carpet cleaner and do the job yourself. While some carpet cleaners are clearly better than others, reviewers say, no machine is perfect. On consumer opinion sites, we found that even the highest-rated carpet cleaners are often prone to problems, such as leaking, leaving carpets too damp and mechanical problems or breakdowns. ConsumerSearch recommends whole-house and spot carpet cleaners, based on expert and owner opinion.

One other fact emerged from my research. Although some carpet cleaners are clearly better than others, no machine is perfect. On retail sites, we found that even the highest-rated carpet cleaners are often prone to problems, such as leaking, leaving carpets wet, and mechanical problems or breakdowns. And while advertising may lead shoppers to believe that carpet cleaners will leave carpets looking brand new, experts say otherwise: "Hot water extractors work best when used to periodically clean carpets which are lightly soiled. Performance on a heavily soiled or stained carpet can be disappointing at best." Although users report very good results with many carpet cleaners, no machine consistently succeeded in removing all kinds of stains. Particularly those that had been in the carpet for a while.

The Hoover SteamVac with Clean Surge F5914-900 has a 12-amp motor that powers five spinning brushes. The SteamVac holds clean, hot water in one of its two tanks; dirty water is fed into the other. The automatic detergent mixing system combines detergent with the hot water, and the rinse feature removes detergent residue. Its signature feature, the Clean Surge, dispenses an extra squirt of cleaning agent at the touch of a button for tougher stains. On-board tools include a spinning hand tool, 8-foot hose and upholstery tool. This carpet cleaner weighs 20 pounds and comes with a one-year warranty.

In one professional test, the F5914-900 did a very good job of cleaning and an excellent job of extracting water from the carpet afterward. On the other hand, its score for ease of use was only average, and it got below-average marks for noise level -- complaints which also appear in user reviews. Users say the SteamVac's spinning brushes are powerful and do a great job of lifting stains. Of all the carpet cleaners we reviewed, this one seems to do the best job of removing excess moisture from the carpet, a task with which many carpet cleaners struggle.

The most common complaint, users say, is that the dirty water tank often must be emptied before the clean water reservoir is depleted, meaning lots of stops and starts to fill one tank or empty the other. Many users also wish that the carpet cleaner came with an internal water heater, which would keep the water hot and allow you to fill it with unheated tap water. Several owners suggest adding boiling water to the clean tank for better results. ---As a proffesional carpet cleaner, I do not reccomend boiling water. The ambient temperature should be around 160 degrees. At 160 degrees you will see water vapor coming off the carpet which people will mistakingly think it is steam. --- I also found a few complaints about the many extra parts; owners say they're difficult to attach to the unit and a bit cumbersome to use.

In my opinion after seeing all the reviews of carpet cleaners the Hoover Steamvac got the most positive reviews for ease of use, water extraction, and carpet spot removing. For the price you will pay for the Hoover Steamvac pet carpet cleaner with power surge you will be getting the best deal.
