How to Move with Kids – Getting Settled – section 3

by Leo Nov

In the final section of this in-depth article we will help you establish some routines in your new home. These tips will help your kids get back to normal after the move.

Time to Unpack Your long distance moving company is finally here, and the only thing left to do is unpack. The unpacking process is almost as important as packing. Keep in mind that packing took you a while so do not expect to be unpacked in one day. One of the best tips we can offer for unpacking is to prioritize. If you do this, your unpacking process will happen in an orderly manner and save you time and energy.

Getting your kids unpacked and settled in their new room should be a top priority, as that will help them feel more comfortable in the room and home altogether.

Take a Stroll Around The Neighborhood Knowing the “Ins and outs” of your new neighborhood is important for comfort and safety, and even more important for your children. After a while, they will get more and more attached to the neighborhood, which will help them conquer any fears they may have had about it.

Be sure to explain to your kids where the boundaries of where they can and cannot go are. By taking a stroll together you can both discover the new neighborhood and any surprises it may offer.

Getting Back Into the Routine There is always a time period, while going through a long distance move, where the family has to make adjustments such as eating out, sleeping at friends or relatives etc. But as the family starts to settle in, it’s time to re-establish the old day-to-day routines. Your new home may lead to changing some of the old routines, but getting back to some type of routine is important for your kids. If you have younger children, try to get back into a routine as quickly as possible, as they may need more consistency.

Some of the family routines that you will need to re-establish include setting up mealtimes, play times, bedtimes etc. You may want to enforce the rules gently to prevent any additional stress and to make it easy for your kids to get back into a routine.
