A Day In The Life...of an Undercover Art Teacher
Refocusing on Art
The new school term brings with it a new chapter in the case book of the undercover art teacher. What is an undercover art teacher you might be thinking? Well, every teacher can be an undercover art teacher if they so desire. This new movement has come on the back of a diminished focus on art in UK schools and how it is possible to covertly teach art in just about every other subject using any means necessary. Here are some helpful suggestions on how to make art a valuable part of your classroom though the course of a day:

Morning - English

An easy one to start: pictures help to tell a story, so in order for children to learn a story or the themes of a story it is important for them to have a visual representation of what they are reading and writing about. Say you are doing the story of the 'Three Little Pigs' why not get your kids to draw their own wood, straw or brick house. You can grab craft materials like straw, wood and brick very cheaply so you won't even need to break the bank.

Before Lunch – Science

To teach your kids about healthy eating and how important vitamins and minerals you can try getting them to build faces or other pictures using cut-up fruit. You could also incorporate the designing of a healthy lunch menu into this lesson; both the type of food and also the look of the menu. You can include everyone in the menu building by writing down ideas on a field easel and having a vote for the best ideas or just have everyone do it on their own.

After Lunch – Maths

Oh dear, not maths! Worry not for the undercover art teacher can turn any subject into a fun art lesson. Shapes are the perfect mathematical excuse for getting them drawing pictures with acrylic brushes or drawing inks. Start with asking them to draw objects like, a house, a car, a building and a face and then try to get them to pick out the separate shapes from each one.

Afternoon – Art

Haha! Bet you weren't expecting Art! Of course art is an incredibly important part of children's development as it helps to explore their emotions, their creativity and helps build their self confidence. If you are lucky to have access to craft materials, art should be incorporated as much as possible into every lesson. Mostly because kids love art!
