EPDM Pond Liners, More Than Just Rubber

EPDM pond linersEPDM pond liners or ethylene propylene diene monomer is a synthetic rubber product designed to be safe for use in ponds with fish populations. At first glance, this product looks just like black rubber from a bicycle inner tube and has a similar smell, but looks can be deceiving. You see, EPDM pond liners are made from entirely different ingredients because many of the ingredients put into rubber for inner tubes and roofing liner are toxic to fish. As a matter of fact, roofing rubber even has algaecides impregnated into it and if you aren't aware, algaecides are essentially weed killer which is highly toxic to fish and some plants. EPDM Pond Liners Rate Number 1

EPDM pond liners aren't the only option available to pond builders, there are several more. Besides rubber, you can opt for hard plastic shells which are preformed. These tend to be much more difficult to install than implied and far less forgiving of errors. You can also choose polyurethane or polypropelene liners, these are typically thinner than EPDM pond liners and much stiffer. They are usually used on large projects where sizes are larger than 50' x 100' and boulders are larger than 3' across. For smaller ponds you may find some people selling vinyl liner. Although vinyl is perfectly suited for a swimming pool, it is a poor choice for use in a pond. It doesn't hold up well to pond conditions and is not puncture resistant so you can expect to be fixing a lot of leaks. Similar to vinyl, you'll find a hybrid liner called Xavan, which sandwiches a cloth liner between layers of vinyl and claiming to be stronger. One good look at this liner puts some doubt in the mind of most and attempting to tear it confirms that doubt. This might have been a good idea on paper, but when used in a pond, it comes up short. The Professionals Choice

When building any kind of water feature, pond, fountain or otherwise, nothing compares to 45 mil. EPDM pond liners. At a thickness of .45 mil they are the king kong of pond liners. They are the most puncture and tear resistant of all liners and they'll hold up to the elements. Most manufacturers place a 20 yr. warranty covering any degradation due to UV or soil exposure. You can place rocks and gravel directly on top of EPDM pond liners as long as you place geo-fabric under the liner and another pad made of geo-fabric under the heavier boulders. EPDM pond liners are the preferred choice of professionals for good reasons, there's nothing better. EPDM Pond Liners Are Simple To Repair

Punctures and tears in EPDM pond liners are simple and fast to repair and no special tools are needed. Simply clean the area around the hole or tear with a clean rag, then wipe with rubbing alcohol. Once dry, cut a piece of patch from the 6" round liner patch available anywhere EPDM liner is sold, and make it about 2" larger than the hole or tear. Peel back the clear plastic cover revealing the sticky side and place it over the hole or tear being careful to eliminate any bubbles and press down with your fingers to make it stick. Presto, it's fixed and ready for water. The Best Choice Is EPDM Pond Liners
