5 Tips For A Broadway Career

by Vera Esther

So you want to be a musical star? Maybe in the big apple? You can sing, you can dance and you can act. That's a good start. But, it's a rough world. And there are some things you should know and ways you should prepare so that you aren't totally shocked by the world of auditions. You need to thoroughly understand your skills as a performer, and know how to be perfectly prepared for auditions.

Know what you look like

Get real with yourself. Not everybody is the fit and beautiful leading role. But hey, that's okay! Because not every main role is thin and beautiful. Think of films like Real Women Have Curves, or George from Seinfeld, or Dianne Keaton in Something's Gotta Give. You've got pudgy, stocky and menopausal all in that list. But still, they're amazing actors who we love. Why is that? Because they're comfortable with who they are! But they would have never, ever landed any of their roles if they were not realistic about whom they were (read: what they looked like.)

So, how do you get real? Get an assortment of photos of very different looking musical leads of your gender, in roles you'd eventually like to have. Make sure each looks quite different. Round up some buddies or family members that you know won't hold the truth back from you and tell them your work depends on their constructive criticism. Sift through the pictures and ask your friends to rate on a scale from 1 to 10 how close you are, appearance-wise, to pulling off those roles. You may not get the answers you like but you'll never be happy in life if you won't get real with yourself.

Know what you sing like

Sorry but, not everyone can pull off opera, or Kelly Clarkson songs, or Stevie Nicks' wonderful, raspy sound. If you keep trying to sing high notes that you just can't hit, or have a voice that isn't yours, you'll face all sorts of awkward things in auditions like vocal vibrato or voice cracks.

Be prepared

Always have in your car a mini wardrobe with a variety of looks so that if your agent calls you and asks, "Can you make an audition for the role of an urban teenager in 20 minutes?" you can. If you're going to try out for a part that will require you to sing, carry out a few of your breathing exercises for singing just before auditioning. Put aside ample time to do them so that your voice can be relaxed. Another thing to consider as far as spontaneous auditions go: don't day drink. Say your friends call you up for a little Sunday Funday with mimosas on the beach, you may want to skip that! What if you get an awesome audition that afternoon?
