PI Profits: 7 Steps To Get Your PI Business On The Right Track

by Paul E. Beauchemin

There are 7 steps that can help get your PI business on track, start bringing in clients, and begin generating income.

The first step is to try to differentiate yourself and make yourself a specialist in one niche. You might be thinking that by limiting yourself to one niche you are not exploring a lot of the marketplace, but really what happens is that when you become well-known for a specialty, you actually attract more people to you because you have become an expert or an authority figure. Being an authority figure is one of the secrets of persuading people to act. By being an expert in one area you can actually attract people for multiple areas of investigation.

The second step is to turn your conversion funnel into an hourglass. The hourglass is about creating recurring customers who not only bring back their business, but others as well. The top part of the hourglass is where you need to use your marketing to get people to know you, like you, and trust you. This can be done through several different ways such as advertising or writing articles. It's about getting your name out there and building rapport with potential clients. The top part of the hourglass then narrows down the number of people that are attracted to you and those are the ones that you focus on in the bottom part of the hourglass.

The bottom part is where people hire you and after you've completed a job for them, they hire you for another job or refer you to their friends or family. As you build clients, the bottom part of the hourglass expands into a greater network of referrals that come back to you.

The third step is to deliver great content. With the internet, people tend to do a lot of research when they are looking to hire people or buy anything. They like to check out the reviews and find out what other people think before they try anything. People want to know if you are an expert and if you have solved some cases successfully. They want to know all about you, so when people visit your PI website, you want to be sure to have something that can educate them.

This is also where you show potential clients why you are different from other PI's and what kind of value they will get by hiring you. Make yourself stand out. A great form of content to have on your website are stories about former cases you have solved as well as testimonials from former clients. This is a great way to boost credibility. By showing how you are able to deliver value, people start to feel far more comfortable with you and compelled to do business with you since you have already established a great sense of trust and authority with them.

Step four is to make your online presence the hub of your marketing. Since the internet is a very effective way to connect with people, having a website is a great way to focus your business. You can drive traffic to your website through many different routes such articles that you write, social media, direct mail advertising, or even referral cards. A website is also a great way to keep track of metrics and the type of advertising that is bringing customers in the door.

Step five is to create a lead generation trio, which consists of advertising, public relations, and referrals. The first part of the trio is advertising. A very highly targeted measurable way to promote awareness about your business is through direct response advertising. It is the most completely controlled way of getting your name out there, although it can be very expensive.

The second part of the trio is public relations. You can build a relationship with the media by contacting your local TV or radio station and offering to become their expert. HARO is a great place to start. You can sign up to become the go-to guy when reporters are looking to interview private investigators that are experts in a special niche.

The third part of the trio is referrals. The highest quality of leads are referrals. When you give good service to your clients they are going to be happy to refer people to you but it is usually not at the top of their mind. So you have to create a system so it becomes at the top of their minds.

Step six is to create and implement a great sales system. One of the biggest weaknesses in business, not just with PI's, is the lack of a systematic approach. You should have processes for everything you do all the way from when the interested prospect calls you all the way down to how to ask for a referral after a completed job. Having these processes in place will ultimately save you more time and earn you much more money.

The seventh and final step is to live by the calendar. This basically means that you are going to have to make marketing a habit and be persistent and consistent with it. As a PI, you might receive many clients all at once, although it's not a good idea to stop advertising when you get busy. Once you catch up with cases that you have, you will have nothing in the pipeline and will go through a dry spell looking for clients. So instead of scrambling to come up with new leads, simply choose a set of simple and effective things and do them consistently. You will have to find that perfect balance between advertising and working so that you continue to get clients, but not so many that you become overworked.
