How To Choose The Best Safe

by Wendy Moyer

If you are like most people, making sure that you have a safe and secure home can induce quite a bit of stress. However, if you have a place that is secure - a place where you can keep your valuables - then you will be able to ease a lot of that stress. Read this article and you will find out how to choose the right safe for you and your family.

What Will You Store In Your Safe?

Before choosing a home safe you have to figure out what you are going to use it for and the level of security that you need. One of the first things to determine is what you are going to put into your safe. Then you'll have a pretty good idea about the size of the safe that you will need.

Where Will You Put Your Safe?

In the movies it seems that every safe is hidden behind a picture. Although that certainly is a possibility there are other options. When you choose the location of your safe it will often be through the process of elimination. That's because a lot of safes are quite heavy. Consequently you will have to make sure that the location of your safe has the strength to support its weight.

What Kind Of Lock Should You Choose?

For the most part you will have a choice of five kinds of locks. The most typical lock can be opened with a key. Although combination locks are popular, numeric keypad locks are gaining in popularity. Locks that use electronic swipe cards and biometric locks are also available.

There are inherent challenges with each type of lock. For example, where would you keep the swipe card or key? So, in addition to planning where you will locate your safe, plan where you will secure your combination, key, or swipe card.

What Type of Safe Is Right for You?

Your safe's size will pretty much determine which one is the right one for you. If you need a large safe you will probably need to put it in a closet or in your basement. Smaller safes can be fitted in the wall, or into your floor underneath your carpet or rug. You could also disguise a small safe so that it looks like something else.

If your home is equipped with an alarm system you may also be able to set the safe up so that it transmits signals that will warn you if someone is tampering with it.
