With a working car battery, a vehicle won’t run, plain and simple. Not only does the car battery provide the jolt of electricity required to power all the electric components, it also keeps the electrical current steady in order to keep the engine running. The battery works by converting chemical energy into the electrical energy needed to fuel the engine starter. Vehicle batteries are available in a number of different brands (i.e. BWD, MotoMaster) and sizes (i.e. dual terminal, side terminal). Most importantly however, they come with a limited life cycle and clear signs of impending failure that all vehicle owners should be familiar with to avoid the need for a last minute towing service. Common indicators of a low battery are: • A slow engine crank often characterized by a “rur rur rur” starting noise • An illuminated check engine light • Low battery fluid level o Most vehicle batteries are encased in a partially translucent casing which allows for the fluid levels to easily be observed. In the event that the casing is opaque, the level can be inspected by removing the red and black caps, if unsealed (uncommon in modern vehicles). o If the fluid level is below the level of the energy conductor/lead plates, the battery should be changed and the charging system tested. • A swelling, bloated battery case • A stinky, sulfur like smell resembling rotten eggs (caused by battery fluid leaks) o Leaking fluid can also lead to corrosion around the connection posts. A battery may also stop working due simply to its age. A battery that is over three years old is considered expired (may vary depending on brand). A quick check of the four or five digit date code on the battery case cover can reveal when the battery was shipped from the factory to the local battery distributor as well as where the battery was made. Although a very small component in comparison to many other engine parts, a car battery should be closely monitored for any changes in physical appearance, odours, and fluid levels, along with overall engine power issues. Only by doing so will you be able to easily identify the issue at hand, regardless of whether a towing service is required by Access Roadside Assistance or not.
