You Can't Master Online Marketing Until You Become a Good Communicator

by Laura Gregory

When you initially start to get into online marketing and test the waters a little, it's easy to feel overwhelmed. As you browse through forums and articles, you'll discover all types of lists about what you have to do to be the next big thing. The items on these lists probably all appear to be contradictory. One list will state that becoming the next "big thing" is all about being patient. Another is going to say that you need to have lots of business savvy. You'll also see some that will say that you have to be truly creative if you desire to succeed. And don't forget about all of the pages telling you that the software offering there is what will help you become successful in IM.

The truth is that all of these things are important to your success (well, maybe not all of those software packages, but the other stuff). Business smarts, creativity and patience are all incredibly crucial to your success in IM. However, none of those things count if you are not able to distinctly communicate all of them to the people you want to purchase from you.

There is more to effective communication than putting up an amazing sales page. All you need for that is the money to engage the services of a seasoned copywriter. A gorgeous web site and extensive FAQ are not what you need for effective communication. You can have a pretty site with an extensive FAQ section by hiring good web designers and writers. Good communication calls for being good with interpersonal communication and in direct copy as well. So what is it that you need to do?

1. Don't let an e-mail sit unreplied to for more than a day. This is no jest. Your reply doesn't have to be very long. You can simply inform the person who emailed you that you've gotten his email and will be getting back to him shortly. When you do this, include a a snippet of the original e-mail. This indicates to the person that you genuinely care about them and are not an autoresponder.

2. Answer calls. Try to not be a call screener. Whenever your telephone starts to ring, answer it by the third ring. Do this even if you earnestly don't want to talk to the person calling you. You'll be glad to know that there is, nonetheless, an exemption to this rule. You don't need to worry about being tied to your phone aroudn the clock. What you should do is have clear business hours during which you can answer the phone. Let your business hours known on your website and state them in your voice mail message. And, above all else, always return your calls.

3. Make sure that the individuals you send messages and emails to really have gotten those emails. This shows the individual that you value him or her. You'll endear yourself further with the people you work with and who purchase from you if you ask them if they have any questions and check to see to it that they understood the points you were trying to make.
