Installation Process of Cast Stone Fireplace Mantels
Each installer or installation team has its own means and methods of installing stone fireplace mantel or surround. Although, there are many types of stones such as cast stone, limestone, sandstone, travertine, marble, cantera and manufactured stone, the installation process is the same or very similar. However, there are basic guidelines that are universally followed. Typically, two men crew is sufficient to install a stone fireplace surround. If there is an over mantel, third or fourth helper may be required. Before cutting any pieces, the installer should do a “dry set” to see if any cutting may be required. Yes, sometime field cutting is required. The cast stone pieces are easily cut using diamond blade with hand grinder.
Typically, the fireplace mantels are set with adhesive on the drywall or any other type of substrate. The installers also should make sure every piece is also secured mechanically using screws or brackets, in addition to the adhesive.
Of course, experience plays a big role when it comes to tricks and quality craftsmanship. It is important to be sure all pieces are lined up, leveled and installed plumb.
Installer should follow the shop drawings provided by the fireplace mantel manufacturer. Each piece should be labeled. The labels should match the shop drawing and the pieces. If there is confusion, the installer should contact the manufacturer for clarification.
After the fireplace mantel is installed and glued on. The installer will put grout at the joints. The grout color of the joints could vary. Most people want the grout color either the same or slightly lighter to that it is not so pronounced. The grout is a mixture of cement, sand, latex and pigment. Sanded tile grouts could be used for the joints. Such grouts are available at local building materials stores.
