Why Bipartisanship Is Harmful To America

Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC), was once quoted saying, "The problem I have is, this is my 12th year in the Congress -- I cannot recall any bipartisan bill that did not increase spending, expand government and increase our debt." We're bombarded by media coverage of the extremes on both sides, and how they prevent Congress from moving forward. We hardly ever hear an unbiased view from major networks and what they report is usually a very distorted perspective of what is actually happening. I don't find it surprising at all, that major networks are trying to reinforce the idea that bipartisanship is a good idea into our heads.

Bipartisanship is often looked at as the reasonable solution to the "barbaric mayhem" created from these rival factions and those that promote it are often looked at virtuously. They are sometimes seen as politicians that, in some cases, are willing to set aside their own interests for the greater good. This point of view is far from the truth. Instead of progress, what bipartisanship actually promotes, is the reinforcement of the failing status quo. It's best to think of bipartisanship as a settlement. One in which financial lobbying interests reach a compromise. It's not hard to see this, when you keep in mind the special interests of very powerful companies, unions, other groups, and how these special interest groups will be impacted by legislation.

Think about it, do you think most Americans are happy with the direction the US is headed at the moment? According to a recently released survey from Ramussen Reports, only 34% of Americans believe that we are headed in the right direction; the majority believe that we are on the wrong track. So why would we want to compromise? What we need is a real solution to our current economic crisis and general state of affairs, instead of digging a deeper hole for ourselves. American comedian and social critic George Carlin, once said that, "the word bipartisan means some larger-than-usual deception is being carried out" and I think this is a very good analysis.

Our current president, Barrack Obama, is one of the most bipartisan presidents that our nation has ever seen. Under this presidency, bipartisanship usually means republicans giving in to "the Obama agenda." If you're not happy with the Obama administration, then for you, at least at this time, bipartisanship is not a good thing. Having two or more competing parties keeps them in check; when one politician (or group) makes an unpopular decision, or does something just plain wrong, the competing party will point it out to the public. Hasn't history taught us that monopolies are not in the best interests of the majority? If the federal government were to unite under one party, I have no doubt that the United States would soon fall under a dictatorship. In fact, when Benito Mussolini rose to power in Italy, he made the other parties illegal. Hitler, who admired him, would eventually imitate this to further establish his own power. I'm not saying that Obama is intending to ban other parties, that would be an absurd statement. I'm simply pointing out the danger of an uncompetitive political environment.
