Is Network Marketing Really Like A Lottery Ticket?
What is your mindset when you hear the term "Network Marketing" or "MLM", "Multi-Level Marketing", "Word-of-Mouth Marketing" or any other related to that?
Do you instantly envision a fast-talking person that tries to convince you, mostly by pushing and pushing, to register for a quick-cash method or to purchase a secretly developed product that will, almost instantly and magically, bring you eternal youth, health, energy and, if you take it daily for the next 32 months, will also bring world wide peace?
Do you imagine an opportunity to earn big money by trying to make your wealthy aunt Rosie and auncle Ruppert-one on each leg, of course-to join with you, so you will never have to work again?
Don't you have a very clear understanding of how this profession works? (Because if you do, you are already a Professional Network Marketer, for sure! And if you want to know, just follow me and read my blog.)
The first image, of course and very damaging to our industry, is one of many people that follow a very old formula, badly applied, known as the "Rule-Of-Three-Feet": talk about your business to every person that comes into a radius of three feet around you--no matter what the situation, the person or the timing.
And they pair it with another rule of thumb ("following up is crucial"), but again badly applied, that results in a very uncomfortable situation every time you bump into these people. They insist, push, remind, push, insist again, that you need to join them in their "very profitable business," unless you want to stay as a loser for the rest of your life... (Not a very good leading example, if you ask me.)
But what I want to talk about now, is the second image: the one that equals MLM with buying a lottery ticket (I got this example at the Go Pro Recruiting Seminar with Eric Worre last December in Las Vegas).
This mindset is very damaging to the new recruit, to the stability of our profession and to the future of the sponsors that instill this into their recruiting dialogue.
I've heard lots and lots of times the phrase: "You only need to recruit one or two very good leaders into your group and you're done for life!" Meaning, that when they recruit them (as if that would in itself be the easiest thing in the world) they won't have to worry again, since those two leaders will do all the work and as they are in their organization, they will reap the online comissions permanently.
This is very damaging, people!
First, it installs the lottery principle in our business: just go looking for people as if they were lottey tickets. Scratch their surface and see if comes up a winning combination. If not, discard it and go for the next one, until you get your leaders.
"It's a number's game!" I hear also a lot.
Although there is some true in all of that (yes, theoretically is possible that you talk with two people that get involved with you and prove to be fantastic leaders and recruiters; yes, theoretically...), the reality is that you have to work with a lot of new distributors, help them, build with them, answer their concerns, do a lot of training and supporting, to develop a leader out of them.
Yes, also it's a number's game, but never in the life a game of getting and then forgetting them.
In second place, the lottery mindset makes you forget about the part or "work" in NetWORK Marketing. You have to develop a NET, by ways of applying sound principles of MARKETING, and then go on and heavily WORK on those concepts.
Finally, the lottery concept for MLM, doesn't take into consideration two of the things that build organizations and, in turn, great incomes: the relationship factor and the personal growth factor.
People relate, first and mostly, to you and then to your offering.
And, although you can get an early success without being a good leader (especially, a provider of good example), the only way to maintain that success is to grow into one. To learn more, to develop yourself more (I always tell that "the level of your prosperity--not only the money earned, mind you--will never surpass the level of your personal growth... And if it does, very quickly will level down").
So, in closing this text, I invite you to consider yourself a leader of people which means a developer of leaders. Relate, teach, train, support. And, then, surely, you will have your two (dozens) of leaders working with you.
