Important Abilities All Mothers And Fathers Need
Most parents seem to think that the things they need to know about raising children are pretty obvious but that doesn't mean that it isn't necessary once in a while to pick up a new skill or two. This is because there is no such thing as a perfect parent; there are going to be at least a couple of weaknesses/areas of improvement that you should work on. The world changes so fast; to use one example: the majority of today's parents did not grow up on the internet but now they have to keep an eagle eye out to see how the online world might be affecting their kids. Let's examine some of the important parenting skills that all parents should work on.
Unlike in earlier times, many parents today attempt to raise their kids alone. For single parents this is hard enough but even if there are two parents, they shouldn't try to do everything on their own with their kids. Look for help/advice from anybody who wants to offer it like your own parents and family members and your friends. Anyone who has raised children themselves can help you out in the areas of parenting that you find the hardest. You've more than likely got older relatives who, while probably not completely up to date on all aspects of modern life, have all sorts of wisdom and insight into parenting and other areas of life.
You've probably been told that the highest priority for a parent is to be as selfless as possible and to always put the kids before everything else. While it's true that every parent has to make certain sacrifices, you also have to make sure your own needs are met. Parents who don't take care of their own needs will just burn out and that will make them less effective parents. You need to make sure that you make some "you" time. This also includes spending time alone with your spouse or partner. There is absolutely no doubt or disagreement that your children are a priority but they do not need the sun to rise and set on them every single day. This is not good for you or them because it makes it harder for them to develop their own resources.
So many kids today are in the habit of spending all of their spare time in front of computers, televisions or on the phone. For this reason, one of your parenting skills should be the ability to instill the ability to value free play. Beyond the regular organized activities you've signed them up for, do not forget how valuable playing at the park or on a playground or having play dates with other kids can be. Many studies have proven that children who don't play often enough are far more likely to develop behavioral conditions like Attention Deficit Disorder, depression and aggression. Doing outdoorsy things as a family on the weekend like hiking, swimming, walking in the woods, etc are great ways to encourage the free play.
These are some of the parenting skills that can help you build a successful relationship with your kids. Every single parent has unique hurdles to overcome and those hurdles will be dictated by the personalities of you and your kids. You need to remember, for your own sanity, that parenting is a process and that it changes constantly as you and your kids get older but that having solid guidelines in place can be helpful both to you and your kids.
