Naturally Correcting Your vision

by Mike Zupp

About 50,000 people in the US lose their sight every year. Blindness often begins with a straight-forward eye problem that doesn't get taken care of. Our eyes are of high importance. Without them, we can't do our usual activities. Thus, it's high time we gave them some special attention. Here are some handy tips to help you care for your eyes properly and ameliorate your vision:

Start with a healthy intake of foods. Eat more fruits and vegetables. Strawberries and blueberries are high in antioxidants, which can halt the development of "Age-Related Macular Degeneration" (ARMD). Green vegetables, like spinach, contain a pigment called "lutein", which helps stop the formation of cataracts and the development of ARMD. You can also take food supplements that contain high levels of nutrients to ameliorate your eye health.

Exercise can also keep our eyes healthy and improve our vision. Well known eye exercises that you can practice are "near and far focusing", "palming" and "figures of eight". These exercises will only take up 5 to 10 minutes of your time per day and can be performed anywhere you happen to be.

Palming is done by putting the cup of your palm around the eyes with your fingers resting on your forehead and wrists on your cheeks. This action is intended to relieve stress around the eyes by resting them.

"Figures of eight" is done by tracing an imaginary figure eight with our eyes. This is intended to increase the flexibility of the eyes.

The "near and far focusing" exercise can be done by alternately focusing your eyes on objects that are close up and far away from you. This exercise will help strengthen the eye muscles.

Another tip to keep the eyes healthy is to blink often, especially if you spend a lot of time in air conditioned rooms. Blinking stops air from blowing directly into our eyes and keeps them from drying. Dried out eyes can be problematic in that they can cause corneal abrasions, which may also lead to poor vision, if not looked after promptly.

When working on computers for extended periods of time, try to adjust the computer screen 24 inches away from you, at an angle of 10-20 degrees. Viewing computer screens at length can strain your eyes and diminish the strength of your eye muscles, thereby bringing on blurry vision. Hence, you should make a point to take several short breaks throughout the day to rest your eyes.

Your eyes are of paramount importance to your overall well-being. Therefore, you really need to make sure you give them the utmost care. It's much easy to maintain healthy eyesight now, rather than trying to fix your eyes later after they have deteriorated. We need to watch out for elements that can cause eye irritations so we can prevent them. In summary, we really need to take any and all eye problems seriously and they should always be addressed ASAP.
