Vintage Posters: A Jackpot!
The first vintage color poster came out in Paris, 1869. Advertising a large variety of products, they were stuck on every available flat surface. Posters were so effective that they were produced more than twice. The first printing run edition, however, is considered the original and most printers put these aside for collector clubs which became famous around the 1890s.
Toulouse-Lautrec’s 3-sheet, “Moulin Rouge” fetched more than $220,000, in 1989 —the highest paid price for vintage posters at that time. Italian, Swiss, Russian, Dutch, German, and British posters too have become specialties with prices rising steadily for many categories such as Olympics, war, travel, and propaganda.
