Keeping Seniors Safe With Self-Defense Products

by Karleen Lindsey

Many years ago one of my aunts was known as a night owl, reading all night long and sleeping during the day. She was afraid of what the darkness held and didn't want to be surprised by anyone trying to break in while she slept. She had no training in how to protect herself nor did she have any self-defense weapons, so she stayed awake all night with her lights on to deter any would-be intruders. That's not a very healthy way to live.

One of the negative aspects of aging is that we lose our strength. What used to be effortless is now a more difficult task for weaker muscles. Disturbingly, the frailty of age makes elderly citizens easier targets for criminal purposes. They are not able to put up much resistance and can easily become injured and incapacitated.

So, what can be done to ensure the safety of your aging parents, aunts and uncles, grandparents? There are actually a variety of products that, if used correctly, will protect seniors in their fragile years.

One such item is a personal alarm, which can be carried in a purse, pocket, vehicle, or clipped onto clothing. It could even be worn around the neck for quick access. Simply push a button and the intruder will run for the hills to escape the ear-piercing alarm filling the air. Even if the victim has become injured or fallen down, he or she can get to the button on the alarm and summon assistance by attracting attention to the situation.

Another item for protection in the home of an elderly person is an intruder alarm. Anyone targeting the home of an elderly person or couple for robbery or assault believes it will be easy to invade that home because they will receive less resistance due to the frailty of age. But by easily installing an intruder alarm to one or more of your doors or windows, you can abort an attempted entry by causing an ear splitting alarm to activate. There is even a remote control that can be easily programmed to set or disarm one or more alarms.

Another scenario to consider is: maybe someone in a repairman's uniform knocks on your door in the middle of the day. You don't think twice about opening the door to talk to him because he looks legitimate. He quickly pushes past you into your home, surprising you and you have no way to stop him. What do you do now?

A can of pepper spray is the best deterrent at this time. Before you open the door to anyone you don't know, grab your can of pepper spray. You can either be ready to surprise someone by easily hiding it in case you need it or openly show that you have protection in your hand. A pepper spray aimed at an assailant's face will incapacitate him by swelling his mucous membranes causing extreme difficulty in breathing, excessive coughing, choking and even nausea. It will also cause temporary blindness and give you enough time to escape and call for help.

A stun gun is another secret weapon senior citizens can use to take down anyone attempting to assault them. There are many shapes and sizes, even ones disguised as cell phones. You don't need strength to protect yourself if you have a palm-sized 4.5 million volt Hot Shot stun gun in your hand when someone attempts to grab you. Just press the stun gun against the assailant and he will be knocked off his feet.

There are so many defense products now that are so inexpensive that they should be a part of any elderly person's life. You don't need to spend hundreds of dollars on a top of the line home security system, although that would be ideal if it is in your budget. There are many less expensive individual products that will serve the same purpose of protecting senior citizens in their homes, apartments, vehicles and out on the street. We need to make it our business to help protect our elderly friends and relatives. They deserve it.
