Heated towel rails have been used throughout Europe for many years, and have been steadily gaining popularity in other countries as well. They can be customized to meet a wide range of design, function and budgetary demands. Customers can choose from many styles, including ladders and turntables.

These warming units are generally available in chrome, gold and white finishes. However, many manufacturers offer their clients a wide range of customized finishes in virtually any color. They may be constructed from brass, copper or chrome. The most durable, resilient and efficient models are crafted from Type 304 Stainless Steel.

Standard sizes generally start at 800 millimeters high (nearly 31 and one-half inches) and 300 millimeters wide (nearly 12 inches). For large spaces, customized units which extend to 1800 millimeters (almost six feet) in both width and height can be ordered.

Aside from electric-only models, all units require a set of valves. There are two types of valves which may be required: straight or angled. The model which is needed depends upon where the pipes connect. For connections to the bottom of a pipe, two straight valves are generally needed. For side-rail connections, a pair of angled valves will be required. Any time the pipe work comes out of a wall, a pair of angled valves must be used. The exception to the single-style pipe valves is the dual-fuel rack. These units often require a set of hybrid valves, one which is angled and one which is straight.

Dual fuel models have standard connections to central heating units, but they also contain an internal electrical heating element. Special T-piece fittings are utilized in these models. The fittings allow electrical elements to be inserted through the valve's entry point, and then wired to the power supply. This feature allows the unit to be operated independently. It may be turned on to heat towels even during the summer months and at other times when the central heating system is turned off.

The T-piece elements are available in a broad range of power, from 150 watts for smaller rooms to 500 watts for large bathrooms. Professionals recommend a safety precaution for homes with young children: dual fuel units should be mounted very high off the floor.

Towel warming racks may be left on continuously without causing any damage. However, in order to conserve energy, many experts suggest using a timer. For example, the heating element can be set to turn on about 30 minutes before shower time, in order to give it enough time to warm the towels. Conversely, the units can be turned off during the day when no one is at home, or overnight.

In addition to keeping towels fluffy and warm for use after showers and baths, these units can keep bathrooms warm and dry. They help deter the growth of harmful bacteria which thrives in moist conditions. Depending on the size of a bathroom and its level of its insulation, one or multiple racks can be installed to enhance the warmth of a room. However, the additional room-warming feature is simply a bonus; these units are not designed to heat entire rooms.
