Life insurance lets a Mom's wishes to play out beyond the grave

by Aaron Decker

Judy and Adam were happy on the Midlands smallholding they now owned. They had chosen to make their futures in the countryside and left the high powered executive jobs they both occupied in the years preceding their move. Since having their two children they had felt determined to let them grow up with a life filled with animals, meadows and natural beauty, which prompted the move to KZN. Judy opted out of the co-management of their small dairy business and settled into the full time job of lifting and carrying her two boys and the daily tasks of a mother, while Adam went on to do well enough on his own in order to financially support the family lifestyle and the growing boys needs. Regular meetings with their life insurance broker over the years had allowed Adam and Judy to restructure their life insurance premiums and benefits, according to all the changes that were going on in their lives.

The couple had chosen to invest in a joint life insurance policy many years prior to having kids and choosing to live in the country and they were used to making the incremental adjustments to their policy as the years rolled on. Adam was now the sole financial provider, with Judy occupying the vital role of organising the kids and running the family home. Despite giving up her financial role in the family, Judy still occupied a major role in the running of the family, lifting the kids, doing the laundry and all the cooking and cleaning. This made it imperative that Judy remained part of the insured under the family's life insurance policy.

Tragedy struck in April 2009 when Judy was killed in a car accident on her way home from visiting her mom in the city. Without Judy's support in the home, it would have been impossible for Adam to keep up with running the farm and the family home and he thought he would have to sell the farm in order to get a higher paying job in the city, where he could juggle the roles of financial provider and caretaker for his kids more easily. Was this the tipping point that would force them back into the city and against Judy's wishes for her children?

Adam consulted with his financial advisor as to what to do and after using the insurance payout to finance Judy's funeral, he realised that he shared his late wife's wishes for their children to grow up away from the city.

With part of the insurance payout, Adam decided to employ Petrus, who previously worked in the stables, as the boys' everyday companion. He now lifts the younger son to school and to those ever important rugby games. Part of the payout from their insurance policy went towards Petrus' salary, as well as that of a cook and a cleaner. The payout also allowed Adam to put aside finances for the eldest son to begin his tertiary education where he currently resides at the University of Pietermaritzburg. During the holidays, he likes nothing better than to return to the midlands, enjoying helping his dad in the day to day running of the farm.

Despite the absence of Judy in their lives, with the help of properly planned, well structured life insurance quote, the family has banded together in their chosen spot. A twilight meadow walk sees the country air rich with freshly cut hay and the smell of potato bushes, Adam tells me that these are the times he most often reflects on how fortunate the boys are to still live in such a serene environment. Judy's wish for the boys to grow up in the country, through sound life insurance, has remained a reality. Adam believes Judy would have wanted it this way.
