How To Successfully Set And Achieve Your Personal Health Goals?

by Adam Leppin

How healthy are you today? Surveys show that millions of people are not as healthy as they could be and that this generation is less healthy than previous ones. This can show up in a variety of ways. We can experience a continual lack of energy, feel extremely tired or exhausted after a little exercise or suffer from an inability to concentrate. Very often there is no specific problem or underlying cause that your doctor can provide a solution for.

Sometimes people decide that the problems caused by their lack of health are sufficiently large to do something about it. But, unless they reach this point they very often continue to accept the situation. However, many people who do start to do something about their health give up before they achieve the results they wanted. So, if you are serious about wanting to improve your health what should you do? What steps offer the best chance of success?

Assuming that there is no medical problem for your lack of fitness and health the first thing you need to do is accept personal responsibility for your health. It is probably caused by your life style. If you are looking to excuse your responsibility and find yourself trying to push the blame onto others you are very unlikely to achieve success. Once you accept responsibility for the problem you can then take responsibility for solving the problem. You can then move towards achieving your health goals.

The first rule is to know exactly what it is you want to achieve. It has to be a specific target. You can not have a general goal of being a little bit healthier. It is too vague and you will never be sure if you reach it. Plus, you can cheat and convince yourself you are a bit better or a bit healthier.

Then, when you have something specific, write it down. Write it on a small card or piece of paper that you can easily carry in a bag or wallet and read it two or three times a day. Remind yourself about your goal.

Write out your goal in a positive sense. Do not focus on any negativity. Your goal should be the thing that you want. You must not have goals that talk about having less of a problem. Rather, focus on a positive outcome.

Write your goal out in the present tense as though you have achieved your goal. Make I am... statements not I will be.... statements. This is an important psychological technique and increases your chance of success.

You can make the statements even more powerful by imagining how you will feel when you achieve it. Try to imagine it using all your senses. This is important. If you do not feel brilliant when you imagine it then it suggests that the health goal you have set is not that important to you. If it is not important then you are unlikely to take the necessary action.

Once you have written your goal start to take some action. This process is more like a marathon than a sprint so there is no need to overdo things in the first week. It is always encouraging if you can find someone else who is as committed to achieving this as you. You will be able to help each other. But, always check with your doctor if you are planning to introduce changes.

Most health improvement goals will involve a combination of exercise and diet. To learn about ways in which your diet can play a vital part in becoming healthier follow the link below.
