Blogging Tips: 7 Easy Ways To Sabotage Your Blog!
There are several ways in which it is possible to mistakenly undermine your blog's credibility and quickly reduce your readership. It is essential to avoid these mistakes in order to develop a valuable and sustainable blog.
1. Consistently recycling content
Repurposing content is a great way to expand your online presence, but consistently recycling content on your blog tends to backfire. The purpose of your blog is to act as a central hub for your online activities. To achieve this, it needs to consistently provide readers with fresh new content and insight they can gain anywhere else.
2. Unpredictable posting schedule
Nothing lets your readers know that you really don't care about your blog than having random, unexplained times of dormancy where no new posts are added for weeks on end. One of the best ways to gain regular readers is by posting on a predictable schedule. Even if it is only once a week, some level of predictability is necessary.
3. Posting too much
On the other end of the spectrum, posting too much content can be equally problematic. Posting several times a week is beneficial, but posting several times a day is overwhelming for most readers.
By posting too much, you will quickly overwhelm your readers and they will not be able to sort through all of the content you are trying to share. To make matters worse, it also means they will likely miss the most important pieces of content that you create.
4. Relying on short posts
You do not need to write 1000 words or more every time, but it is important to make sure you provide enough detail to make each blog post seem complete.
Posts shorter than 200 or 250 words make it almost impossible for you to share a cohesive, comprehensive thought. Readers expect a blog post to be complete and thorough which is difficult with a blog post shorter than 200 words. 5. Making issues overly complicated
There comes a point for every blog when they cover a topic which is more technical than the normal topics. It is important to simplify concepts and ideas so that every reader can understand them. Sharing your message in a clear and concise manner will always be more effective than making it overly technical or complicated.
When you broach a complicated or technical subject, make sure you include relevant screenshots or images which help demonstrate your point.
6. Expecting your readers to come to you
Any time you post new content to your blog, you should make it as easy as possible for your readers to find it. Expecting them to hunt down your latest content on their own is a recipe for failure. Leveraging search engine optimization and sharing content through social media sites and e-mail is an easy way to help your readers find you.
7. Turning off comments
At some point, every blog owner will contemplate turning off the comments section. This is especially true if you find a disproportionately large amount of spam.
While enabling comments does require some additional effort to filter out spam, it is essential to running a truly interactive and engaging blog. Comments are the only way your readers can share thoughts about your topics and ask questions they need answered.
Your blog is a powerful asset if you allow it to be. By avoiding the most common mistakes, you will not only keep your readers happy but ensure they continually come back for more.
