The way to stay independent and at home when you get older

by Bebe Reeb

Something that people commonly say, regarding seniors, is "I desire to stay independent," or "It's good for my parents to live independently." You can help someone who is recuperating from an illness or injury or who has a chronic, degenerative condition by not only showing kindness but also making sensible decisions so that they remain independent and safe in their own home.

Someone who has the ability to live by himself will need to retain a certain degree of mental acuity, and if present can remain independent. You can still be independent even if you need some help for a physical issue.

Does being on crutches after going through a fracture mean that the person can no longer take care of themselves? Actually, they would be fine with a little bit of support at home along with a pair of crutches.

Even doing normal household tasks like grocery shopping or bed making may take a while longer for those who are in their eighties and nineties. Life becomes worse when they are hit by many illness like Arthritis, physical ailments so that they can't walk properly at these times they are not in a state of safety. At this stage outside help is necessary.

Now lets look at some reasons why you will get more independence rather than less by enlisting a home aide:

A little help with personal care like washing, taking care of toileting needs, or dressing. The idea is to have another person around just in case you require help with something so that you stay safe. When all is said and done, you don't want recovery to be interrupted with a fall.

You'll eat better and stay healthier when you get help doing the shopping and cooking. If someone helps you to get around outside of your home it means that not only can you get to your medical appointments, but you can enjoy the community, as well. There are several ways of spending your leisure time. You can go to a restaurant and socialize with your friends.

Having an aid around for at least part of the day will also provide you with companionship. Enjoy another person's company at a meal. For those living by themselves this can greatly cut down on depression and feelings of loneliness.

When there is someone to aide in the everyday household work, ranging from laundry or cleaning out a closet, it will be easier going for you. We all know that a hard fall can really alter life for someone.

If your spouse has dementia, you get an opportunity to rejuvenate with some assistance.

Even caregivers need a break so they can ensure their health stays intact while caring for another.
