How To Maximize Your Laptop Experience

by Winston Takeda

Shopping for a laptop is a lot of fun. You can take them pretty much anywhere, and with so much technology to choose from, you can get your own portable WiFi, or MiFi, wherever you want to go. This is truly amazing. In order to get the most pleasure possible from your laptop, you've got to have the right accessories. They'll simply make it so much better.

The first thing to consider is an external camera and microphone. Sure, all laptops these days come with webcams and mics built in, but these aren't usually the best you can get. Laptops are priced based on memory, processor speed, and graphic capability. Because you can get a really good HD webcam for under a hundred bucks, laptop manufacturers aren't going to spend much on their internal camera.

Make sure to get a microphone that plugs into the USB. A cam/mic combo is your best bet. By plugging into the USB, you'll be by passing some of the internal, noise generating stuff. This will make the sound a lot cleaner. Of course, there are some really high tech mics out there, if you are planning on doing any pod casting or anything. But generally speaking, for making some pretty decent videos and Skyping, you won't need anything other than a webcam / mic combo for a hundred bucks or so.

You'll also need a decent pair of headphones. Don't make the mistake of thinking that you can switch your iPod headphones back and forth between your laptop. Keep a separate pair for each device. It will be much simpler that way. Getting a good pair of earbuds shouldn't set you back more than fifty bucks or so. Or you can get some traditional headphones. The only thing to consider is carrying them around. If you've got room in your laptop bag, then get some decent headphones. There's plenty of good movies and stuff online you can watch anywhere.

As mentioned, a laptop bag or case is essential. It should be sturdy, and waterproof. Check the zipper, to make sure it's durable. Generally speaking, the zipper is the first to go, and you can't really repair it. So if you get a cheap bag and the zipper goes out on you, you've got to buy a new bag. Check and see what the warranty covers. A decent bag should only be about fifty bucks.

Sure, these accessories can add up, but compared to the price of a good laptop, they should only add about ten or twenty percent to the cost. And they'll more than pay for themselves with the extra benefits you get.
