How To Keep Your Leather Brief Case Looking Great

Leather is a flexible material made from animal skin which undergoes a process called tanning. An astringent compound called tannin is applied to the rawhide, and permanently alters its protein structure. The result is a fashionable, durable product that is used to make furniture, jackets, purses, and other useful items. Leather is classy, especially when it comes to men's leather bags. Several professions greatly utilize the leather brief case, a necessary tool for carrying important papers and documents. Many times, however, the brief case becomes a casualty to mistreatment and negligence, as their owners engage in highly active agendas. Their briefcases are tossed in the backseats of cars and kicked under chairs of meeting rooms. Leather can get dirty pretty fast under these circumstances. There are several things you can do to keep your leather in good shape.

An Ounce Of Prevention

Respecting your leather is the best way to keep it looking good. Take the time to notice where you may be setting your briefcase down to avoid placing it on surfaces containing spilled beverages, or sticky substances. If you do happen to place it on something, take the time to wipe it off immediately, to keep the elements from drying on or soaking into your leather. During stormy weather, try and keep your case covered. If your leather case does get rain or other moisture on it, dry it off right away with a soft cloth to prevent unattractive spots, rusting hardware, or stitch rot. A waterproofing agent, such as acrylic copolymer, can be applied to your leather to keep it from sustaining water damage. It is a good option that still allows the leather to breathe, and does not leave your case feeling slippery or sticky like some waterproofing products can do.

Condition Your Leather

To help preserve the quality and look of your leather case, you can use a leather conditioner. Often times, the manufacturer who produced your case can suggest the right conditioner to use. Once you have obtained the conditioner, place some of the product onto a soft, lint-free cloth. Gently wipe the cloth over the leather of your case. Remove any excess conditioner with a separate, clean cloth. Conditioning your case should be done about every six months.

Don't Forget To Check Inside

With so much attention being paid to the exterior of your case, remember to look inside at least once a month to maintain the interior. Take out all of your papers, discarding the ones you no longer need and organizing what you still must keep. Remove any loose dirt or debris with a vacuum. If you do not have a vacuum handy, shake your case upside down over a garbage can. Gently wipe the inside lining with a lightly moistened cloth. Be careful not to saturate the interior, as it may result in mildew later on.

Watch Out

Using alcohol or bleach solutions to clean off mold or mildew may work for other materials, but it will severely dry out your leather. Other products that will ruin your leather include saddle soap, mink oil, and household cleaning spray. Avoid leaving your leather case next to a furnace, clothes dryer, or other heat source. Also, when storing your leather case, keep it away from sunlight.

Spending a little time taking care of your leather case will help it to last longer, and keep it looking great regardless of the demands you place on it.
