How to Get the Sleep That You Need

by Harriette Balanoff

Do you have problems both falling and staying asleep each night? This is no fun, but don't panic. Insomnia is far from a rare problem. This is a common complaint of people of all ages. This isn't a condition you have to keep for the rest of your life. No one has to live in a state of perpetual sleep deprivation. If you want more sleep, there are practical steps you can take to get it. Try one or more of the suggestions that follow and you may start feeling more rested very soon.

Don't watch TV right before going to bed at night. This includes TV programs, movies and videos on any of your screens or devices. Make the last hour before going to bed one where you're not watching, texting or playing at anything on a screen. If you feel the need for some stimulation, stick to something with sound only. Fast paced images, however, are telling your brain that you need to be in a wakeful state. Therefore, it's not the best strategy to make television your very last activity for the day. If you're used to watching TV until the wee hours, then, try shutting it off an hour earlier.

Sometimes increasing your physical comfort can make all the difference when it comes to sleeping.

The way you're dressed for bed can be a factor -make sure any clothing or pajamas you're wearing are comfortable and loose-fitting. Make sure you have a comfortable mattress to sleep on and that you enjoy the feel of the bed linens. Is the room you sleep in too warm or chilly? You'll find that you can sleep better if all the conditions around you are as comfortable as possible. Don't make sleeping more of a challenge than it has to be by putting up with anything in your environment that's making you uncomfortable.

The best way to get good sleep is to have the room dark. It seems to be a no brainer that it would be hard to sleep in a room filled with light, but there are surprisingly many people who live with this frustration. When you are really tired, it won't matter much how much light there is. One reason for not being able to sleep in a light room is that the brain doesn't perceive that it is time for sleep, so try to make your room very dark. People who work nights will fall asleep easier after their shift if they use blackout curtains to make the room seem like it is the middle of the night.

Sleeping better at night can depend on many factors, just as insomnia can have a variety of causes.

In extreme cases, you may need prescription medication or medical help. The strategies and remedies we've covered here can be effective most of the time, though. Don't overlook these possible solutions to your sleeping problems, as they can be quite effective. Try to remember, though, that it is going to take some time and trial and error to find the magic key to getting a full night's sleep each night.
