How 360 Panorama Gadgetry Can Benefit Your Business

by Dirik Hameed

Virtual tours work by taking hundreds of overlapping photos. They are then merged together to make a seemless image. This is fine in concept, but extremely difficult in practice to do properly. You cannot just manually hold a camera and it spin round a room. Otherwise you would not get the overlap correct and thus it would be nearly impossible to join together to make a flawless image. So instead the professionals will use a computer controlled camera and tripod, which makes tiny movements on the camera to take the photos. This way ensures that the spacing is correct to then stitch the images back together to form the virtual tour.

The images that are captured are normally of a very high quality which is better than HD. Once captured your high quality images are then joined to form a highly detailed single image. Your customer is then amazed at the quality of your venue. The current technology that delivers virtual tours is not able to fully show off the full detail of the image, but because you already have this extra detail, your tour is future proof.

What I have talked about is only one method of capturing the images. This method will however give you the best quality images. Some companies will capture their images with a single lens system. These are great for estate agencies where it is cost over quality. These lenses will bounce the light round a 360 degree area, thus allowing the camera to capture 360 degrees in one shot. As you're cramming the full 360 degrees into one image you will have nowhere near a high quality HD image. Not only this but you won't be able to tilt up and down- just pan left and right. This is what makes these great for an estate agent who is just looking to get the shot and move on. When you are paying the big money for virtual tours, don't settle for less than top quality. This will be noticed by your sites visitors.

You would think that hosting your virtual tour would be hard. The company who made the tour will often host it for you for the first year for free. Or they may help you host it on the same server that your website is already hosted on. Either way it is a lot less hassle and stress than many people think. The virtual tour company will normally talk directly with your web designer leaving you just to find the right place on the website if you have not found it already.

Once the virtual tour is on your website your visitors can then make use of it. Different companies will make different features available for your visitors to use. Such as hot spots, where a little pin is placed in the image. When a user hovers over, it shows extra information. This is especially good for giving people a brief outline before allowing them to click a link to take them to the full article. However it does not clutter up the image.
