Good Reasons For Kids to Study Martial Arts

by Cicely Ray Picellne

There are many advantages of teaching young children forms of martial arts. It's a concern if kids are constantly fighting, but learning self defense is another story. Between crime and the well publicized issue of bullying, self defense is an important skill. Beyond this, children these days don't always get enough exercise and martial arts is an excellent workout. Some people have a negative idea about martial arts, but this is typically because of a misunderstanding of its goal.

Even though the martial arts teach self defense, they also instill several important characteristics like confidence and self esteem. Martial arts is a practice which could completely transform children that have various behavioral or emotional issues, such as not enough confidence. The skills young children acquire in martial arts are useful in the wider world also, and this can help them realize their true potential. Martial arts come in several varieties, so it's important that your children pick one that's suitable for them. With so many, that may be a difficult decision, but Judo, Karate, Jiu-Jitsu, Taekwondo, and Muay Thai are all popular with children. Generally, they're divided into grappling/throwing type arts and punching/kicking, although several styles include both.

Once you determine the right style, you need the right dojos and martial arts facilities, which might take some researching. Large cities will have a wide selection of schools to select from; suburban and rural areas, not quite as many. Small towns and suburbs, though, also have their share of devoted trainers; you simply may have to look a bit harder. A small school may have only one black belt instructor; others may have assistant instructors and proficient students may teach classes also.

It is best to avoid schools that are extremely crowded that class sizes are big, as this will mean less personalized instruction. You must not sign up your kids with a martial arts school without meeting the head instructor and observing a class or two. You absolutely want your kids in a class that's focused, or you could be wasting your money and time. The general atmosphere of the school can tell you a lot - look at the quality of the equipment, the level of cleanliness and the attitude of anyone you meet. If the teachers and facilities are sub par, the experience of your kids will not be up to what martial arts should be for them.

Take note of all the schools or dojos in your area and check out as many as possible. The decision should be a combination of your own judgment and how your children think about the school. There are several great martial arts teachers around, so there's no reason to compromise in terms of quality. It can be a great investment for the kids and the parents too.
