Marriage Records - Searching Done Right

by Jason Keith

When you search for marriage records, there is no guarantee that you are going to receive the records you are in search of. Although a search for marriage records online is often free, many sites and states will require that you pay for the information that they are able to find. There is a fair amount of information that must be included before you can find the marriage record of someone specific. Here are some of the most basic requirements of searching for marriage records online.

Information that you Need-

In order to find a record of someone specific you need to know the bride and groom's full names, the county, city and state that they were married in, both of their birth dates and in some cases, the place of their birth. If any of this information is left out, you may have a hard time finding any results. Sometimes you are asked to pay a small fee for the copy of the marriage record once the information is found. The reason that this information is so specific is because there could be millions of John Does or Sally Smiths in the world and only more specific information is going to narrow the search to a limited number of people.

What Will it take in Receiving Copies-

In many states, a copy of a marriage, divorce or birth record will not be given to a person unless you are an immediate family member or the attorney of one of the two people listed on the marriage record. Although it is public information to be told that the record exists and was found, it is not public record for everyone to own it. If you cannot prove that you are a direct descendant of one of the two people on the marriage record you will not receive a copy, even if you paid the fee to have a copy made. In order to be given a copy of the record, you must be a grandparent, parent, sibling or child of one of the people named on the certificate. This policy went into effect in the early 1900s when people could easily request this kind of information and would assume the identity of another to inherit family heirlooms or other important artifacts that they wanted.
