Choosing the right learning management system can be a very perplexing and difficult experience, especially for people who do not know what they should look for. In some situations, the representatives from an educational institution may let the vendors of LMS take the lead role since they are not familiar with how the selection process should works. However, this can be a fatal mistake for most because the vendors of LMS may not be provided with all of the specific details that can affect the overall plan. Therefore, to avoid making the fatal mistake of investing funds into a learning management solution that is not efficient or feasible for the operation; the company’s representative should know what they are looking for in advance. Listed below are two key things that should be considered prior to meeting with any vendor.

Map out the Learning Management System Process in Advance Before the company’s representative contacts LMS vendors for a demonstration, the administration of the new current processes should be planned out in advance. For instance, everyone should know who will be responsible for specific activities and how they will be carried out. From entering the names of the courses in the system to entering all of the course content, the entire process should be mapped out before the vendor comes to the site.

Without this information, the company’s representative may choose a system that is a nightmare to administer properly. In some cases, the operation may be required to double their staff instead of reducing it, especially if it creates more work for the immediate staff to handle. On the other hand, if the information is clearly mapped out in advance, the company’s representative can search for a system that will immolate the new process that they are expecting to administer.

Validate Data Fields Another key area to include in the LMS system pre-planning process is validating data fields to see if the system is going to be compatible with the organization’s current structure. For instance, some learning management systems are built to only handle specific data lengths. This means the course names that the learning institution has set-up may not fit into the new learning management system. Therefore, each course name will need to be changed if the LMS vendors system is purchased. If all of the features of the system are suitable for the company, the administrators may have to include changing the current names to accommodate the new system. This step will also need to be incorporated in the implementation plan since the changes must be made before the new lms system can be deployed to the users. While there is a host of different details that must be considered when making the overall decision, mapping out the administration of the system in advance can make the process simpler. By mapping out the administration in advance, the company’s representative will also have a better idea of what they are looking in a good learning management system.
