The Use of Metal Detectors in Securing Theatres

by Sylvan Newby

Movie theatres are included in the growing list of commercial establishments that need metal detecting devices to improve security and improve services. Being public places where a great number of people are concentrated for a long period of time, these supposedly facilities that provide fun and entertainment, could also be targets of unscrupulous criminals, ranging from common felons to terrorists.

With this circumstance, it is only right that theatre owners and managers must ensure that the security of their facilities is enhanced with the personnel and equipment like metal detectors. These men and machines must be at the forefront of the efforts to keep the moviegoers safe from any untoward incident.

A metal detector is not a device that could be used by just any security personnel without appropriate training involved. Such device may be effective inherently but if this is used in a wrong manner or technique, then its effectiveness could be greatly reduced. This is the reason why, no matter how technically advanced this equipment may be, it is still necessary that the handlers acquire a good amount of skills in its use through proper training. Of course, the theatre manager must make sure that this is implemented.

Security personnel should not only be skilled at using the metal detector, they should also be courteous and sensitive to the feelings of every moviegoer. Some moviegoers may think that the routine check-up is an inconvenience. They may not be aware if a certain situation requires the use of stricter security procedures to guarantee safety. To prevent disputes over the check-up, it is best that the security personnel show respect to the moviegoers even as they use the detectors. To make the process even quicker, the theatre may make use of a walk-through detector instead of the more common hand-held types.

Hand-held metal detectors in movie theatres may not only be used for security reasons. There are certain times when moviegoers lose small valuables while inside the premises of a movie theatre. It can be difficult to find with just the the use of the naked eyes and a flashlight. Even if all the lights are on and the theatre is empty, these valuables can still be difficult to find. Under this circumstance, detectors can be a huge help. With such devices, theatre personnel may just sweep the whole area where metallic objects could have fallen off by themselves from their owners. Moviegoers would certainly appreciate these efforts by the personnel and would perhaps patronize the theatre for good.
