Hosting Cocktail Parties at Home

by Lamberto Fresnillo

Cocktail parties used to popular in the 60's and 70's but now they have regained their popularity fully. Many TV shows have scenes of chic cocktail parties and this may have been a great contributor to the revival of cocktail parties. The most popular drinks for cocktail parties are mixed drinks but wine and beer are still staples.

A convenient way for a busy host to entertain guests is a cocktail party. The guest list can range from family member, neighbours, to people from the workplace. This kind of party would typically run for a couple of hours and guests can freely mix with each other unlike in a sit down dinner where guests are at the same table for three hours.

Experimenting with a variety of food in the menu is the best part of hosting a cocktail party. The serving portions are small and you can be sure that if your guests don't like something, they can always choose another one because there are plenty to choose from. Everyone will have something to eat that they will enjoy. For starters, you can have Spanish tapas which have acorn cured ham, sausages, and cheeses to go with your drinks. Tapas are a very versatile way to serve starters and are great conversation starters too.

The most important aspect of a cocktail party is, of course, the cocktails and other drinks. The most requested drinks are the cosmopolitan, dirty martini, apple martini, and the chocolate martini. The most popular drink is the cosmopolitan as it was popularized on the Sex and the City TV series. A dirty martini does not really mean that it has dirt in it, but rather it has an addition of olive juice to it.

If you are just starting out on being a cocktail party host, these are some tips to having a successful party. The first thing that you have to do is to stock up on a lot of ice. A lot of ice will be needed for chilling bottles of wine, champagne, or beer and also for serving drinks with ice. Have an assortment of glasses on hand to be used to serve the different kind of drinks. Include wine glasses, tumblers, martini glasses, champagne glass, and shot glasses in your list. The list can go on depending on what kind of drinks you will be serving. If you don't know what glass to use with a certain drink, you can also search for it on the internet. Make sure you have glasses that are more than twice the amount of guests. This will ensure that you will have enough glasses to last throughout the entire party.

If you are planning to serve wine and champagne, have a variety of red and white. Both kinds of wine are popular with each other and some guests will have a preference over the other.
