Why Silver Coins Worth The Money Have Additional Value

by Nathan Lee

There was a time in this country's history when most currency coins were indeed made of actual silver. Today, however, most coins are made of inexpensive and readily available metals such as copper and other alloys. In the days when coins were made of precious metals such as silver, the cost of the precious metal was closely related to the denomination value of the coin. Today the situation is quite different with regard to a gold or silver coins value as compared to its metal content. This is due largely in part to the increase in value of precious metals, or conversely the huge decrease in the value of fiat or paper money. This is a trend that will likely continue.

The primary reason why coins made of silver or gold are so much more valuable than standard coins made of mixed alloy is that they have stored inherent value. In fact, silver more than gold has potentially more inherent value due to its greater scarcity. For example, silver is used in a wide array of industrial applications and the demand for this precious metal is only increasing. With the continued development of battery technology and electric cars, silver is becoming one of the most in demand metals on the open market. Both silver and gold are excellent stores of value as the dollar and other currencies around the world continue to become devalued.

One of the simplest ways to prove that gold and silver and other precious metals do indeed retain their value irrespective of fiat currency is by an illustration. One example illustration is of the old Spaniard sailing ships that sailed hundreds of years ago. Many times these ships carried large stores of gold and silver coins. Often times these ships would sink and not be discovered for a few hundred years. When the ships are indeed discovered and the gold and silver coins are retrieved they still have incredible intrinsic value. Typically any paper money that is found on a sunken ship has very little value in comparison. This is just one illustration of the "value storing" capability of gold and silver and other precious metals.

Silver coins worth money have additional value that is far beyond the face value of a given coin. There is no denying this point and that is why wise investors typically capitalize on this concept. Those with savings and retirement accounts that are dependent on the equities markets and interest rates will find that there is great risk in maintaining these types of accounts. The truly wise investor today looks at gold and silver and other precious metals as a true store of wealth. One other important distinction that should be made when discussing gold and silver investing is the fact that they are physical precious metals that retain value and not paper gold or silver. Many times investors purchase gold and silver and receive a certificate indicating that they own a certain amount of the metal. This is also a risky way to invest, therefore investors should always deal in physical gold and silver.
