My Dad Certainly Can Be Very Funny Sometimes
With Father's Day right around the corner I had to find something for my dad. Buying something for my dad is always really hard for me. So when I discovered some JCPenney coupons in the Sunday paper, I knew exactly what I was going to get him: a new wallet. That same old, cracked wallet has been my dad's sole one for about as long as I can remember. The odds are that it's only been 5 or 6 years. For a wallet, five or six years is really a pretty long lifetime.
He's the kind of man that will wear things until they fall apart. I may be mistaken, but I think some of his shirts are ones he wore when he was in high school. That's been at least 11 years. He does like to get gifts, though, so I'm not worried too much. He'll get a lot of good use out of anything someone gives to him. He just isn't really the kind of person to actually go into a store and go shopping for his self.
Every year when the gift-giving season kicks in, Dad quickly starts into what we adoringly call his 'fixer-upper' mode. Of course, this means he'll just find something to fix. He will tinker with things that aren't broken and fix things that are broken already. When he starts this, he totally avoids doing any kind of shopping. Shopping doesn't seem that bad and I've never known why he has something against it.
I always enjoy shopping and browsing the stores a lot. I like it even when there's absolutely nothing I'm going to buy. Sometimes it's great just to get ideas for presents or gifts that I would like to buy. Then, if something I found just won't stop looking like a good idea, then I might go buy it. That's how I decided on the wallet for dad.
I kept imagining him opening it up and being really excited that it was something he could actually use on a daily basis. I discovered that I really no idea what type he would like as I was standing there in the store looking at the huge variety of wallets they have available. I did my best job and picked one that was made of high quality leather. The wallet I decided on was the highest quality since I figured he would appreciate quality over style any day.
I'm really glad that I went to the store fairly early, since there were a lot of people there.
Apparently there were lots of us taking the opportunity to do some last minute Father's Day gift shopping. I also got gift card for him from the store so he could shop. I sort of thought he would take it as a joke. Since he despises shopping so completely, I thought it was a funny thing to give him. When he opened the wallet and gift card, I was floored by how super excited he got over the gift card. He needed a new belt since his old one had finally worn out a few weeks before Father's Day. Now he said he had a reason to go get a new one. I am always surprised by my dad, but it's a good thing.
