Power Source Damage

Almost every household have got electric and electronic equipment for use. These electronic devices all have an assigned standard operating voltage and if that voltage is exceeded, they will damage. That form of damage is called a power surge damage caused by an increase in voltage resulting from a disturbance in electric current flow. It is also called voltage surge. There are factors, which cause this damage and some may be prevented to avoid damage to your household electronics. This surge varies in duration, some quick and other occurs gradually. The one occurring little by little can damage all household wiring and electrical devices if not detected early and stopped.

When does it occur?

Once the lightning strike, a sudden increase in electric voltage results, is damaging all connected devices. All important appliances such as TV, PC and CD players will suffer the damage and stop functioning at all.

How to prevent power surge?

Prevention is better than cure. A care has to be taken in preventing household electronics and wiring from surge damage. This prevention can be done in mainly two ways. - Connect all electronics into a power surge protector-this protector is a device designed to protect electrical equipment from effects of a high-voltage increase. It is plugged into electric outlets, and therefore, electrical equipment is plugged into it. - Unplug all electrical devices during storm weather-this is the better prevention method hence no device will experience any damage no matter how extreme a lightning strikes. Some equipment may still suffer damages caused by severe lightning strikes even if connected to a power surge protector.

How to check for the damage?

As mentioned above, power surge varies in duration, and it is therefore important to detect it early. - If there is a smell of burning wires, thoroughly check for sparks in the wire - Check for smoke as well on the wires Only a certified electrician should be called to check and open devices to examine any surge. Repeated power surges shorten the guarantee of your appliances.

As a word of advice, always stay alert of any storm weather and promptly unplug all devices from electrical outlets. Alternatively use a power surge protector for other causes of damage such a falling trees, faulty wiring and problems with company's supply equipment. Household wiring can be completely destroyed, so it is imperative to unplug everything.
