How Floristry Came To Be At Your Neighborhood PA Flower Shop

by Kathy Stearns

Have you ever stopped to wonder how that fantastic PA flower shop that you used for your wedding came to be there? Floristry as an art has been around for a very long period and will exist for some time to come. Though you can get beautiful Philadelphia flowers from your local florist now, the history of floristry and its origins may surprise you.

Thanks to ancient artifacts we now know that the first known use of flower arrangements took place in the time of the early Egyptians. These arrangements were used for many of the same purposes they are used today. Just as Americans use flowers to honor the passing of loved ones, so did the Egyptians. The Egyptians are also known for putting cut flowers in vases, just like we do today.

As with many notions the thought seemed to appear in other ancient cultures almost simultaneously. Soon the Greeks and other ancient people began to utilize this art form for their unique purposes. Unlike the Egyptians, Greeks and Romans did not use the vase as often. However, fantastic wreath like arrangements came to exist thanks to the artful Romans.

Around this time the practice of using cut flowers for ceremonial purposes reached Asia. These flower were more than just beautiful, they were believed to retain special value based on what type of flower they were. As with the cultures that embarked on this practice ahead of them, the Asians adorned their religious events with various floral beauties. Staple elements such as bamboo were added to the mix.

Europeans were really the last to begin formally arranging flowers for special events, this started around one-thousand years ago. Religious altars located within private monasteries were the traditional location for these arrangements in Europe. Common people did not begin to catch on to the trend for their own homes and ceremonies until about five hundred years later. This is when floristry really started to develop more into what it is today. The florists of this period started to integrate fruit into their designs.

Of course, the Europeans brought this to the new world and now we have a PA flower shop in most Pennsylvania neighborhoods, as well as neighborhoods all over the country. The Philadelphia florist tradition is carried on by those who have been formally trained in post graduate education as well as those got their education through internship or self study. Though they also maintain a heavily secular presence, you'll still find flowers have a rich place in the culture of most modern religions. Some people even buy arrangements just to add some natural beauty to their home. Now you can order floral gifts from a PA flower without ever even leaving the house.
