Martial Arts - Gaining Understanding From This Historic Mixture of Systems
Everything that is involved today in modern martial arts were once simple traditions that were passed down form master to student or from father to son. Many centuries ago this was all considered a way of life. In the past, the martial arts schools were vastly different from the ones we have available to us now. It is one of the many things that has changed about martial arts throughout history. Many times the sense of responsibility that was placed on the tradition of the arts is gone in our more commercialized settings. During the course of modern martial arts, there have been many great achievements because it is not restrained by a strict tradition. While this is good, is it really worth losing some of the other important thing the tradition has given martial arts?
The unique and skillful Brazilian Jiujitsu is one of the more modern and newer strains of the martial arts compared to others. It is a prime example of how most all techniques in any form of fighting can be somehow traced to similar roots. To avoid causing injuries, Jigoro Kano formed Judo to be able to practice at full speed. Later his style was taught to the Gracie family who then concentrated on the ground grappling side of their new found style. Jujitsu can be tracked back to the start of written records and will certainly live on in the future.
Martial arts has evolved to introduce a component of sport. Even lethal styles like Kali have this factor. Because of a high demand for sport variations, tournaments were created. This was also due in part to the widely known need of humans for a challenge and competition. One of the main events in these events are the one on one competitions where techniques are controlled but practices in some form of live fighting scenario. In a fighting systems tournament, one on one combat (also known as sparring) is a chief component.
A search for self-confidence is the usual reason that women come to martial arts. Nowadays, as bad as it may seem, an act of violence is typical and has come to be expected. With this, being a woman, or the 'weaker sex,' no doubt has disadvantages. With an ability to defend oneself, comes with it self-confidence. An attribute such as this causes a person to feel at ease in daily chores and tasks. It also gives that person the ability to face confrontation and danger when needed. For freedom, one must master fear and be able to ignore it.
The difference between attack and defense is a detail that all students of martial arts must understand. The importance of this piece of information cannot be overlooked. Instructors of your martial arts training will have to explain these differences in great detail. There are limits to defending against someone who is wrongfully attempting to harm you. In martial arts, when the attacker has ceased any form of violence or attack so must the martial artist. This is customary and must always be followed. Good offenses sometimes come from the best defenses on another level.
With the rise of martial arts, there has also been the rise of a group that strongly opposes any sort of violence, including MMA. Seeing as we have forbid "Cock Fights", they believe there should not be this sort of activity. Supporters of these competitions feel that it is the next logical evolution of the martial arts which were designed for just such activities. Whether someone agrees with this issue or disagrees with it, it cannot be denied that over these last few years, the MMA world has undergone some drastic changes. MMA has many things going for it, and quite a few going against it. As is with everything, especially sports.
