Living An Active Lifestyle After Breast Lift Surgery

by Dr Kourosh Tavakoli

Amongst the most common questions asked concerning breast lift procedures, is whether or not a person can still live an active lifestyle after the procedure. This is a valid concern as patients are advised to wear sports bras following the procedure if they will be involved in activities such as running or horseback riding.

Will It Impact You?

A few women report being unable to participate in any physically straining activity after the procedure, while other women remain unaffected. Still, there are some who feel like they were only mildly affected. The question as to whether or not you will be affected can be determined with the help of your doctor. Furthermore, if you are a very active individual, then chances are that your lifestyle may be affected as a result of the surgery. If you are a competitive athlete, or often participate in activities such as horseback riding or running then you will need to talk to your doctor first.

Size Matters

If you do lead an active lifestyle, then yes, size matters a great deal. A B cup implant will not be as limiting as a D cup. If you are in extreme sports then you may want to consider doing away with the thought of implants altogether. This is because with bigger implants you can expect bigger symptoms, such as back pain which can hinder your performance if you are in competitive sports.

Find a Doctor Who Understands That Sports is Important to You

If you still want to undergo a breast procedure then you will require the help of a doctor who understands just how important fitness is to you. This way, you and your doctor will be on the same page from the beginning. He/ she will work towards giving you a solution that is best suited for your situation and lifestyle.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons has a list of all surgeons who are certified to perform plastic surgery on patients. Develop a list of questions you will ask potential surgeons, and once you narrow down your search, inquire as to whether he/she understands the limitations of exercise and breast implants.

Post-Op Requirements

After the procedure, you would need to hold off on any strenuous activity as your body heals. If you are a competitive athlete then you may want to schedule your surgery at a time when you're not competing. Make sure to schedule it in such a way that you give yourself ample time to heal. Most doctors will recommend that you properly hydrate yourself to facilitate faster healing.

One more thing you may want to take note of: if you have just embarked on a fitness journey and one of your goals is to lose weight, then you may want to keep this in mind when you choose your implants. If you choose implants in relation to your current body size, then when you lose weight they may appear too large for your smaller frame. However, most likely, you would be required to first accomplish your weight-loss goal before surgery.
